In a letter to his beloved Dorothy, a soldier expresses how much he misses her and thinks of her constantly. He carries a photograph of her with him everywhere for comfort and motivation. He looks forward to returning home to start their life as a family again and seeing her smile, which is like the first time every time. An old woman then reflects that people think they have all the time in the world but time is the one thing we can't control or afford to lose, as Thomas Edison said. She has spent most of her time and is now too old to do what she wants, so the listener still has precious time that shouldn't be wasted.
1. NARRATION
Letter
00:01:24:06 My dearest Dorothy,
I miss you deeply and can’t stop thinking of you when
I sleep at night in my bunk. That beautiful smile of
yours keeps me going throughout the day. I have a
photograph of you which stays in my pocket and goes
everywhere with me. I always look at it before I go
out on patrol. And it reminds me that I am not alone
and that you’re with me when I need you most. I look
forward to seeing you when I get home and life can
get back to normal and we can start being a family
again. Every time I see you, it’s like the first time.
Old Woman
00:00:02:00 – 00:01:14:09
The trouble with life is that you think you have all the
time in the world to do what you want. You think you
can do everything you’ve ever wanted to do. Fall in
love, be happy or even do something crazythat
getsyour adrenaline going. But there’s one thing that
can determine what you actually get to do in life.
Something we can’t control. And that’s time.
Thomas Edison once said ‘Time is really the only
capital that any human being has, and the only thing
he can’t afford to lose’.
2. I couldn’t agree more. We can’t afford to lose
something we don’t have much off. I’ve spent most of
my time. I’m too old to do anything I want to now. But
you, you’ve got time. Precious time -that shouldn’t be
wasted.
