Essay On My Writing Style
Over the course of this quarter, I have written several projects that were like nothing I had ever written before. These foreign styles were a
challenge for me. For a long time, I was used to writing only academic essays because that was all I was required to write in high school. I now see
that there are many other styles that can deliver that same ideas as an essay if they are written with a clear purpose. Looking back on the course and on
my projects I can see that the main issue with my writing was that I focused too much on the style of the projects. I was more concerned with how
the projects were written not what was actually being written, because of that the arguments and ideas that I tried to convey lost their impact. The
first project we wrote this quarter, the Aristotelian essay, is a prime example of my problem. The point of the essay was to use Pathos, Ethos, and
Logos to support an argument I made. However, when I was writing this project I chose to focus more on these elements rather than my argument. I
cared more about incorporating these elements into my paper rather than clearly establishing my thoughts. This resulted in a paper that was very
vaguely written. An example of this could be seen from the very first sentence of the essay when I wrote, "Due to years of prejudice and ignorance
many people were reluctant to be seen as anything that frayed them from the norm." This sentence is not specific and it barely connects to the topic of
the essay, to top it

Persuasive Speech Ethos Pathos Logos
Mental illness has been a serious disease for many decades yet and still one million people who commit suicide every year. Morally as a person I
feel like we should all get involved to help save a life. Let's face it everyone know someone with a mental illness, so we are speaking on a familiar
topic. We cannot always tell when someone may be troubled or suicidal, however just a simple phone call or text can lift a person's spirits or prevent
them from making permanent decision. A persuasive speech "argues or puts across a point to the audience. It is the art of expressing an opinion
clearly and logically" (persuasivespeech.org). Some of the elements that is need for a persuasive speech is logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos refers to
logic. Meaning

Essay On Ethos Pathos Logos
In many papers you will notice different types of persuasion that help the writer to give a reader a better of understanding of the paper. These types
of persuasion are called rhetorical appeals. Each appeal has its own ability to give to the writer's paper, ethos is the credibility of the work the writer is
using, pathos is appealing to the audience's emotions, and lastly logos is the logical appeal. When writing a paper a person generally uses at least one
rhetorical appeal to persuade their audience. Logos is used to describe facts and evidence that supports the writer's thesis. To use logos in anessay, the
writer needs to find statistics, historical analogies and other sources of facts. I use logos to give facts behind my thesis. When...show more content...
It gives the writer a chance to show the reader that they did the research and found believable evidence . When I give a statement from a doctor or
the American Lung Association, then those sources will be credible because they know what they are talking about, and will show the reader that
I am a credible writer. Since the topic is "Cigarettes are bad for you," the sources for me to use have to be credible so that my claim is supported
and I have the evidence to back it up. Pathos is the last appeal and it gets in touch with the reader's emotions. This is probably the most important
one. If you do not give the audience a sense a feeling within the paper, then they would feel as if the paper is pointless because there is no emotion
involved. The type of emotion to get my claim across could be a very touching sad story about someone who either has come across the bad side of
cigarettes, or someone who has lost a loved one to cigarettes. Pathos and ethos are both very important to tie the story together because they show that
the writer knows what they are talking about.
Rhetorical appeals are the basis of an essay if you either want to get your point across, or you want to persuade someone to be on your side of the
argument. Using all three appeals to work together give the essay a perfect way to show the audience that your side is what they should choose. Ethos
gives the credibility of the writer, pathos gives emotions to

Have you ever wondered how Antony persuades the crowd towards his reasoning so easily? Did you ever wonder if there was a special technique?
In the play " The Tragedy of Julius Caesar" Antony turns a shocked, confused crowd of mourners into an angry mob of rioters when speaking to them.
He does this by using these three persuasive techniques, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Ethos is a technique that persuades through ethics and morals,
Pathos persuades through emotion, and Logos is a technique that uses logic and reasoning. In the play Antony persuades the crowd using a technique
called ethos. For example, Antony says "I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, but here I am to speak what I do know". When he said this he
was trying to explain that he was not against Brutus's reasoning. This makes the crowd think that Antony is a good guy and he doesn't want trouble
which is the technique ethos. Antony also says "O masters, if I were disposed to stir your hearts...show more content...
For instance, Antony says " Brutus says he was ambitious; and Brutus is an honorable man. He hath brought many captives home to Rome, whose
ransoms did the general coffers fill did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: ambition should be made of
sterner stuff". This shows the logos technique because he gives them a logical reason against Brutus's claim that Caesar was ambitious. Antony says
"Yet Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man. You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which
he did thrice refuse was this ambition?" This shows that Antony used the persuasive technique logos since he gave them the fact that Caesar was not
ambitious because he refused the crown three times. This makes the audience believe that Brutus's claim that Caesar was ambitious is wrong. Antony
uses the technique logos by giving evidence that Brutus was wrong for calling Caesar

Using Logos, Ethos And Pathos In Arguments
During the course of GET1021, I have learnt many critical thinking and writing skills such as identifying assumptions, distinguishing between
deductive and inductive reasoning, evaluating the reliability of evidence or authorities, identifying flaws in reasoning and using logos, pathos and
ethos in arguments. These skills helped me with my assignments.
I could identify the author's main claim and key arguments quickly. Furthermore, by breaking down the key arguments into components, I could
understand them better. These made it easier for me to describe and express the author's ideas in my own words for the summary writing. Additionally, I
could distinguish the form and substantiate the validity and soundness or cogency and strength of the author's argument. I could identify underlying
assumptions, fallacies and attempts to appeal to ethos, pathos, and/or logos in the author's argument as well. I also paid greater attention to the
language and looked out for any statistical evidence and counterargument that the author uses to support his argument when doing the...show more

With these practices, I could handle Assignment 2 better. I realised that I could write the report more concisely and critically. I could also identify the
problem that the city my group has chosen is facing, analyse the causes of the problem and propose possible solutions, especially after engaging in
group discussions where we shared what we have learnt. Although we were confused with the problem indicators and causes initially, we managed to
identify and substantiate them properly after receiving feedback from the other groups and learning from them. Moreover, by learning how to establish
links from causes to problems to solutions to criteria for evaluation, we managed to come up with a coherent

Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos
The art of writing is at times concrete and precise, while at other times it is abstract and perplexing. Regardless of the mood or style a piece of
writing creates, the majority of speakers want to appeal to their audience. This desire to please is usually associated with three rhetorical appeals:
ethos, pathos, and logos. These terms are important tools for persuasion created by Aristotle; he stated that if we believe a speaker is honorable and
good, we are more inclined to listen and take what he or she is arguing more seriously. Using different appeals to hook anaudience is clever, and to
successfully persuade an audience is a skill that some spend their lives perfecting, especially when their argument will be critiqued and exposed to the
general public. Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim produced and directed Barack Obama's documentary, "A Mother's Promise," in whichethos, pathos, and

The ability to touch someone's emotions is not only persuasive, but lasting. When Obama speaks of his mother dying, we get a sense of Obama
when he is raw. allowing us to hear his voice crack was a strong, deliberate decision that Guggenheim made so the audience would not be able to
help themselves from sympathising with Obama. Pathos is very effective and can transform a piece of work, which was done well in the campaign
documentary. The film's focus on the love story between Obama and Michelle was another decision made to force the audience to feel something.
Black and white photos of their wedding day, them holding hands and laughing are put into the film because propaganda effectively transforms
relationships into a tool for reaching a person's sympathy and feelings. This was done on purpose because people love love, and people can relate to
love. Understanding what makes people happy, sad, inspired, and so on makes it easier to manipulate the way people

Ethos Pathos Logos In Julius Caesar
In Julius Caesar by Shakespeare there are three persuasions, these persuasions are called logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos, pathos, and ethos are three
utensils used by Shakespeare in Caesar's funeral presented by Mark Antony. Ethos is appeal based on the character of the speaker, Logos is appeal
based on logic or reason and Pathos is appeal based on emotion (Examples). Antony uses these three utensils to turn the Roman crowd of citizens
against the conspirators with an exciting persuasive speech.
What does logos mean? Logos can be facts that are used to persuade someone (Ethos). Mark Antony uses many facts throughout his speech. One of
the key facts in his speech is; "When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept"(Shakespeare). To use this is extremely intelligent by Mark Antony
since most of the people that he is trying to persuade aren't the richest people in Rome. Therefor, when he uses "poor" as the type of people that
Caesar cried for, the crowd thinks that it is wrong to brutally murder someone who cared so much for them that they opened their eyes to Mark Antony
and really took in what he was saying by thinking that Caesar was the best thing for them (Shakespeare)....show more content...
When Antony says, " My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, and I must pause till it comes back to me"(Shakespeare) he wants the citizens to
believe that Caesar was a noble and trustworthy man. This makes the citizens question Brutus when he said, " Censure me in your wisdom, and awake
your senses that you may be the better judge... not that I loved Caesar less, but I loved Rome more (Shakespeare)". Brutus underestimated how
powerful of a speech that Antony was able to deliver without breaking his

Ethos, Pathos, And Logos
Today I am here to take about Ethos, pathos, and Logos and how my discourse community influenced my use of these devices to join other
communities. If you do not know what a discourse community is, then it is a group of people who share knowledge of a particular topic, similar
backgrounds and experiences etc. my discourse community was High school broadcasting which for most students they would never join because it is a
very tech–savvy class. At our school the announcements were not done by an administrator, we had video feed to every classroom in which the
broadcasting class would do the news and create humorous shorts to inform and entertain anyone who was watching .Our job as a class was to inform
students on a day to day basis,...show more content...
As well about half the students did not take us seriously. So with those in mind we had to build up our credibility. In the beginning of the year we
had to start with factual pieces which we brought the students peers to react to videos like the iPhone 6 plus bend test in which I was in charge of.
We got great reactions and we got students to actually watch the show. As well as showing quotes from important people and/or organizations.
Students would actually believe and understand what we were showing and were being informed. On top of that we got each episode checked for
credible by administers which we always passed. From these experience in broadcasting I learned how to use ethos quite effectively. Broadcasting
taught me that without ethos you do not have anywhere to begin. If no one sees that you are credible then no one will listen to you in your discourse
community. It is important to show credibility without there is nowhere to start. This transferred to my own way of using ethos to in the beaginnig
show and strengthen my credibility early on so people keep listening.
It is easy to just say a few facts but as our audience are high school students we had to gain their attention via aesthetic appeal. When I mean is keep
high school students interested in the show and not go on their phones. If we could not connect to them then I would utterly make us useless that is
why we use pathos to keep the

Marc Anthony's Use Of Ethos Pathos Logos
The use of the persuasion elements of pathos, logos, and ethos by the characters of julius caesar was very important in terms of the series of events
that occurred. The most persuasive characters in the book are brutus, antony, and cassius. Each of these three characters used pathos, logos and ethos
throughout the book But each of them only really stood out with their use of one of the three. The ability of Marc to persuade the people of Rome
who were against him to believe in his point of view showed incredible use of pathos. While, Cassius's use of ethical appeal in his dialogue to brutus
showed a fascinating usage of three elements but mainly ethos. And finally, brutus showed the best use of logos with his speech to cassius and the

"You all did love him once, not without cause, what cause withholds you then to mourn for him? O judgement thou art fled to brutish beasts and men
have lost reason" (3.3.100–103).In here, Marc anthony uses pathos to remind Romans how they once felt about caesar, and how they should not feel
joy over his death because of this. This is the best example of pathos in the story because It had such a strong appeal to the emotions of The roman
people that It gave Anthony an advantage over the conspirators. Though Anthony wasn't allowed to speak ill of the conspirators, He was very
persuasive in giving hints and reaching to the emotions of the people with the use of mainly pathos. Another strong example of pathos In MArc
anthony's speech was later on "But yesterday the word of caesar might have stood against the world; now lies he there. And none so poor to do him
reverence" (3.2.116–118). This is also a great example of pathos because of the guilt feeding involved in it. Anthony says this as a way to try and
make romans feel guilty about not immediately mourning for caesar, As he knows he can make them go against the conspirators if they feel guilty

Pathos, Logos, and Ethos in Advertising Essay
What captures the attention of people when they view an advertisement, commercial or poster? Is it the colors, a captivating phrase or the people
pictured? While these are some of the elements often employed in advertising, we can look deeper and analyze the types of appeals that are utilized
to draw attention to certain advertisements. The persuasive methods used can be classified into three modes. These modes are pathos, logos, and
ethos. Pathos makes an appeal to emotions, logos appeals to logic or reason and ethos makes an appeal of character or credibility. Each appeal can
give support to the message that is being promoted.
For example, to make people aware that breast cancer can affect even young women, thefaceofbreastcancer.com...show more content...

One anti–smoking poster shows merely a pair of hands holding a revolver. Instead of bullets the hands are using cigarettes to load the weapon.
Listed in small print on one side of the poster are numerous conditions that may be related to smoking, such as fatal heart attacks, emphysema,
cancer, and gum disease. The phrase "Smoking kills... so why bother starting" is printed in large font at the bottom of the poster. The message of this
poster is clear: Don't Smoke. The poster is trying to portray that smoking is like holding a loaded weapon. Just as someone would be endangering
their life with the loaded gun, they would also be endangering their life with the use of cigarettes. The consequences and health issues associated with
smoking can be just as deadly as those of the gun. Ultimately, if someone smokes they are putting their life at risk. Therefore, the logical act is to never
start smoking.
Finally, a poster from the Centers for Disease Control and the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance features Katie Couric, a well known news
broadcast personality, framing her face with her hands. The question, "Are you the picture of health?' is printed on the left of the poster. Couric's quote,

Ethos Pathos And Logos
An efficient persuasive essay should contain a multitude of elements in order to support claims and establish credibility. The three terms Pathos,
Ethos and Logos are rhetorical appeals used specifically for persuasion. Each of these terms is useful in arguing a point, or persuading a reader to
observe a topic in your favor. Pathos originates from the Greek language, and is translated into "suffering." This appeal is most commonly used to
adhere to the senses, such as a person's emotions, needs, and values. A good example of pathos is referring to one's country as "motherland" in order
to evoke feelings of patriotism. However, using Pathos as an appeal in an essay can either be a hit or a miss. One should only use Pathos if it strongly

Pathos Logos
Pathos, Ethos, and Logos, the foundation of persuasive writing and speaking, fill the world's media and literature. On television, one will have to
wait only a few seconds before seeing an advertisement utilize one or more of these tactics. In the newspaper, nearly every article is strewn with
various uses of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos. The summer reading sources are no exception, as they use a combination of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos to
persuade their audiences. Despite the differences in formality and content, the authors of each summer reading text use Pathos, emotions, to
convince their audience. By using personal stories and imagery, the authors are able to trigger the emotions of the reader, making the readers more
susceptible to their message. In "Let America Be America Again", Hughes shows glimpses into the depressing lives of minorities to connect with
the reader's emotions. Though he fabricates descriptions of other people's lives, he uses personal pronoun "I" to provide a more intimate picture of
the people he describes. Hughes writes, "I am the man who never got ahead, the poorest worker bartered through the years" (Hughes). The personal
story of the man's life evokes sympathy and likely causes the reader to better understand his point of view. Blanco and uses this same tactic in
AmГ©rica, as he tells of specific times in which he struggled with adapting to American culture. As he tells stories of feeling out of place while he

Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos
This text of mine has been written using mostly logos, some pathos, and a pinch of ethos. I have split my text up in different segments. In each
segment there is a different combination of mostly one or two different persuasive modes. the text is made of seven segments. The first segment is
an intro. at first, I tell the home secretary about the problem (abuse of law), I do that by telling them what I have witnessed, and what I have seen
by going from factory to factory, the source (me) is reliable because I have an authority over the situation, this is because I am an inspector, this
means that the first segment uses ethos as a form of appeal, because ethos is the use of authority as reliability. The next two segments are used to give
out facts, this information is given to show consequences that the problem could unfold. This form of appeal is heavily relying on logos. Which is an
appeal that relies on logical thinking and well–informed opinions....show more content...
I then describe the children's life's as sad and exhausting. These two segments use ethos and pathos. First, I make sure that the reader respects me as an
authority that would not manipulate the sources, I have already done that, because I have established at the first segment that the position as an
inspector gives me liability. Then I use my liability to effectively make my reader emotional, by using pathos. Though I did not overuse pathos,
because it would make my letter seem unprofessional which would ruin the credibility as an inspector. Pathos is the use of emotional events or stories,
which I use many times during all my segments to make sure that the reader is always emotionally attached to the

Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos
Aristotle's three forms of proof are ethos, pathos, and logos. Aristotle created these three forms of proof to strengthen persuasion and provide rhetorical
principles that allow for stronger analyzation of arguments. Ethos focuses on the "personal character" of the speaker attempting to establishing the
means of persuasion. This proof aims attempts to analyze the actual credibility of the speaker. The credibility of this speaker can be formed through
previous experience or the messaging techniques that create the reasons as to why the audience should trust this person on a proposed topic. Depending
on the way that speaker presents themselves, they can achieve persuasion when they can establish a strong "personal character...[that] make[s] us think

This approach works on the attempting to create a feeling or set a tone of emotion during the speech. The goals of this proof are to get the audience
to resonate with the speaker from an emotional standpoint. A "speech that stirs up emotions" and "produces [some sort of] effect" in the eyes of the
audience is expressing the use of pathos (Mueller, 90). A good example of pathos approach is a humanitarian guest speaker for a non–profit
fundraising event. This approach is excising pathos because the speaker is using emotional appeal to resonate with the audience in attempts that they
will donate to this cause. The last of Aristotle's proof is logos which attempts to appeal to logical explanations. This proof focuses on "the speech
itself when we have proved a truth or an apparent truth by means of persuasive arguments" (Mueller, 90). In other words, logos appeal to the
fundamental details of the persuasive argument. Logos appeals to truth, evidence, and text to persuade the audience that what is being said is logical.
An example of logos would be an attorney restating evidence in a closing argument to appeal to the logical facts of the

Logos, Ethos, And Pathos Essay
According to our texts and lectures, a good argument must be valid and strong, with evidence or premises, and a conclusion. The premises must be
true and of quality, supported by reasoning or evidence of some sort. The premises must also logically support the conclusion or there would be no
argument. The goal of an argument is to convince the reader to believe in something and to demonstrate that with careful reasoning and consideration,
the writer 's point of view is legitimate. The key approaches of reasoning in an argument are persuasion tactics called logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is
the use of logic to persuade the reader with statements containing rational principles. Facts, such as statistics, or anything that can be proven is an
appeal to logos. Ethos is a plan of action using ethics which help define credibility, reliability, and character through direct knowledge and/or
experience in the situation at hand. Ethos is used by writers to build trust and to demonstrate their qualifications for the statements they make. Pathos
is used to connect with the reader on an emotional level using tragedy, sadness, pity, and other sentimental specifics the reader can relate to. All
three of these Greek artistic proofs are used in the readings of "Out Of Body Image," by an assistant professor of politics at Occidental College in Los
Angeles, Caroline Heldman, whom focuses her work on issues of gender and race, and "X–Large Boys," by Allisa Quart, who is a graduate of Columbia

Aristotle came up with a useful set of principals used in persuading. Those principals, ethos, pathos, and logos are most commonly seen in the media.
When being used in the media two of Aristotle's principals become more useful, while one falls behind. Ethos, being the one that falls behind by not
appealing to a wide variety of the public. While, in the media, pathos, the emotional appeal, and logos, the logical appeal, are the most effective. One
of the more effective is the pathos appeal. When using pathos the media is hitting the broadest population of listeners and readers. Everyone uses there

After giving money a person could feel happy or proud of themselves for doing that good deed. Many more media ads effect most peoples stronger
emotion of passion. The emotions of the so called seven deadly sins could be a great target point for some media ads since gluttony, wrath, pride, lust,
sloth, envy, and greed are truly influential emotions. Most people have strong emotions which makes pathos a perfect strategy for persuading the
public. The second and other effective appeal is logos. Logos or the logical appeal was Aristotle favorite appeal for many reasons. Logos can use
data and statistics. This can be important because it gives the listener or reader actual facts and not just opinions on the matter. Logos can use
opinions to persuade, but most are informed opinions This appeals to the intellect of the reader or listener. This would an important appeal because
unlike the other appeals it has credibility behind it. Whatever the media is trying to sell wether it is a product or persuading someone on a matter it
becomes more believable. An example of a logos appeal was the ads during the campaign for presidency. Barack Obama and John Mcain would use
backed up opinions and facts about themselves and there opponent. This gives the public a more reassured feeling because there getting actual
information to make there decision. This appeal makes persuading the public easy by appealing to the logic of the public. The third and less
persuasive appeal is ethos.

the rest of the story. Throughout the story John Williams constantly brings up God and how good He is, this persuades the reader and convinces them

His family gets killed shortly after being captured and John immediately turns to the Lord. John tries to appeal to the reader's emotions by talking about
how his family died, but he is thankful that the Lord kept him alive and gave him clothing
"for though some were so cruel and barbarous as to take and carry to the door two of my children and murder them, as also a negro women; yet
they gave me liberty to put on my clothes, keeping me bound with a cord on one arm"(12). By using pathos John William persuades the reader to
always have faith in the Lord even in bad times, and he makes sure the reader knows from the start that keeping your faith is the most important thing
especially in the worst of times "that we might have grace to glorify his name, whether in life or death; and, as I was able, committed our state to God"
(12).
Ethos is used in the story as well, the way John uses it is by talking about all the positive things that has happened to him while he is in captivity. He
once again uses his faith, basically saying the reader should listen to him because his undying faith is saving him. By continuously talking about all the
positive things that are happening to him during such a bad time he is giving examples as to why you should believe

validity to your claim because you will be seen as a credible source. After you've established you deliver your message with logos. Logos uses truths

Ethos, pathos, and logos are three means of persuasion used in written and oral communications. Ethos, also known as the ethical appeal, is a
technique used to convince an audience whether or not the writer or speaker is creditable. When an auto mechanic describes a problem with a car's
engine, he uses ethos to persuade the owner of the car that a new air filter is needed. The next mode of persuasion is pathos, which uses emotion to
influence an audience. By creating a common sense of identity, a writer can reach a reader on an emotional level.
An example of this is when a writer discusses something that he/she has in common with the reader. An existing pet owner convincing a new pet owner

Essay On My Writing Style

  • 1. Essay On My Writing Style Over the course of this quarter, I have written several projects that were like nothing I had ever written before. These foreign styles were a challenge for me. For a long time, I was used to writing only academic essays because that was all I was required to write in high school. I now see that there are many other styles that can deliver that same ideas as an essay if they are written with a clear purpose. Looking back on the course and on my projects I can see that the main issue with my writing was that I focused too much on the style of the projects. I was more concerned with how the projects were written not what was actually being written, because of that the arguments and ideas that I tried to convey lost their impact. The first project we wrote this quarter, the Aristotelian essay, is a prime example of my problem. The point of the essay was to use Pathos, Ethos, and Logos to support an argument I made. However, when I was writing this project I chose to focus more on these elements rather than my argument. I cared more about incorporating these elements into my paper rather than clearly establishing my thoughts. This resulted in a paper that was very vaguely written. An example of this could be seen from the very first sentence of the essay when I wrote, "Due to years of prejudice and ignorance many people were reluctant to be seen as anything that frayed them from the norm." This sentence is not specific and it barely connects to the topic of the essay, to top it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Persuasive Speech Ethos Pathos Logos Mental illness has been a serious disease for many decades yet and still one million people who commit suicide every year. Morally as a person I feel like we should all get involved to help save a life. Let's face it everyone know someone with a mental illness, so we are speaking on a familiar topic. We cannot always tell when someone may be troubled or suicidal, however just a simple phone call or text can lift a person's spirits or prevent them from making permanent decision. A persuasive speech "argues or puts across a point to the audience. It is the art of expressing an opinion clearly and logically" (persuasivespeech.org). Some of the elements that is need for a persuasive speech is logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos refers to logic. Meaning Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay On Ethos Pathos Logos In many papers you will notice different types of persuasion that help the writer to give a reader a better of understanding of the paper. These types of persuasion are called rhetorical appeals. Each appeal has its own ability to give to the writer's paper, ethos is the credibility of the work the writer is using, pathos is appealing to the audience's emotions, and lastly logos is the logical appeal. When writing a paper a person generally uses at least one rhetorical appeal to persuade their audience. Logos is used to describe facts and evidence that supports the writer's thesis. To use logos in anessay, the writer needs to find statistics, historical analogies and other sources of facts. I use logos to give facts behind my thesis. When...show more content... It gives the writer a chance to show the reader that they did the research and found believable evidence . When I give a statement from a doctor or the American Lung Association, then those sources will be credible because they know what they are talking about, and will show the reader that I am a credible writer. Since the topic is "Cigarettes are bad for you," the sources for me to use have to be credible so that my claim is supported and I have the evidence to back it up. Pathos is the last appeal and it gets in touch with the reader's emotions. This is probably the most important one. If you do not give the audience a sense a feeling within the paper, then they would feel as if the paper is pointless because there is no emotion involved. The type of emotion to get my claim across could be a very touching sad story about someone who either has come across the bad side of cigarettes, or someone who has lost a loved one to cigarettes. Pathos and ethos are both very important to tie the story together because they show that the writer knows what they are talking about. Rhetorical appeals are the basis of an essay if you either want to get your point across, or you want to persuade someone to be on your side of the argument. Using all three appeals to work together give the essay a perfect way to show the audience that your side is what they should choose. Ethos gives the credibility of the writer, pathos gives emotions to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Ethos is a technique that persuades through ethics and morals, Pathos persuades through emotion, and Logos is a technique that uses logic and reasoning. In the play Antony persuades the crowd using a technique called ethos. For example, Antony says "I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, but here I am to speak what I do know". When he said this he was trying to explain that he was not against Brutus's reasoning. This makes the crowd think that Antony is a good guy and he doesn't want trouble which is the technique ethos. Antony also says "O masters, if I were disposed to stir your hearts...show more content... For instance, Antony says " Brutus says he was ambitious; and Brutus is an honorable man. He hath brought many captives home to Rome, whose ransoms did the general coffers fill did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: ambition should be made of sterner stuff". This shows the logos technique because he gives them a logical reason against Brutus's claim that Caesar was ambitious. Antony says "Yet Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man. You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did thrice refuse was this ambition?" This shows that Antony used the persuasive technique logos since he gave them the fact that Caesar was not ambitious because he refused the crown three times. This makes the audience believe that Brutus's claim that Caesar was ambitious is wrong. Antony uses the technique logos by giving evidence that Brutus was wrong for calling Caesar Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Using Logos, Ethos And Pathos In Arguments During the course of GET1021, I have learnt many critical thinking and writing skills such as identifying assumptions, distinguishing between deductive and inductive reasoning, evaluating the reliability of evidence or authorities, identifying flaws in reasoning and using logos, pathos and ethos in arguments. These skills helped me with my assignments. I could identify the author's main claim and key arguments quickly. Furthermore, by breaking down the key arguments into components, I could understand them better. These made it easier for me to describe and express the author's ideas in my own words for the summary writing. Additionally, I could distinguish the form and substantiate the validity and soundness or cogency and strength of the author's argument. I could identify underlying assumptions, fallacies and attempts to appeal to ethos, pathos, and/or logos in the author's argument as well. I also paid greater attention to the language and looked out for any statistical evidence and counterargument that the author uses to support his argument when doing the...show more content... With these practices, I could handle Assignment 2 better. I realised that I could write the report more concisely and critically. I could also identify the problem that the city my group has chosen is facing, analyse the causes of the problem and propose possible solutions, especially after engaging in group discussions where we shared what we have learnt. Although we were confused with the problem indicators and causes initially, we managed to identify and substantiate them properly after receiving feedback from the other groups and learning from them. Moreover, by learning how to establish links from causes to problems to solutions to criteria for evaluation, we managed to come up with a coherent Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos The art of writing is at times concrete and precise, while at other times it is abstract and perplexing. Regardless of the mood or style a piece of writing creates, the majority of speakers want to appeal to their audience. This desire to please is usually associated with three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos. These terms are important tools for persuasion created by Aristotle; he stated that if we believe a speaker is honorable and good, we are more inclined to listen and take what he or she is arguing more seriously. Using different appeals to hook anaudience is clever, and to successfully persuade an audience is a skill that some spend their lives perfecting, especially when their argument will be critiqued and exposed to the general public. Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim produced and directed Barack Obama's documentary, "A Mother's Promise," in whichethos, pathos, and ...show more content... The ability to touch someone's emotions is not only persuasive, but lasting. When Obama speaks of his mother dying, we get a sense of Obama when he is raw. allowing us to hear his voice crack was a strong, deliberate decision that Guggenheim made so the audience would not be able to help themselves from sympathising with Obama. Pathos is very effective and can transform a piece of work, which was done well in the campaign documentary. The film's focus on the love story between Obama and Michelle was another decision made to force the audience to feel something. Black and white photos of their wedding day, them holding hands and laughing are put into the film because propaganda effectively transforms relationships into a tool for reaching a person's sympathy and feelings. This was done on purpose because people love love, and people can relate to love. Understanding what makes people happy, sad, inspired, and so on makes it easier to manipulate the way people Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Ethos Pathos Logos In Julius Caesar In Julius Caesar by Shakespeare there are three persuasions, these persuasions are called logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos, pathos, and ethos are three utensils used by Shakespeare in Caesar's funeral presented by Mark Antony. Ethos is appeal based on the character of the speaker, Logos is appeal based on logic or reason and Pathos is appeal based on emotion (Examples). Antony uses these three utensils to turn the Roman crowd of citizens against the conspirators with an exciting persuasive speech. What does logos mean? Logos can be facts that are used to persuade someone (Ethos). Mark Antony uses many facts throughout his speech. One of the key facts in his speech is; "When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept"(Shakespeare). To use this is extremely intelligent by Mark Antony since most of the people that he is trying to persuade aren't the richest people in Rome. Therefor, when he uses "poor" as the type of people that Caesar cried for, the crowd thinks that it is wrong to brutally murder someone who cared so much for them that they opened their eyes to Mark Antony and really took in what he was saying by thinking that Caesar was the best thing for them (Shakespeare)....show more content... When Antony says, " My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, and I must pause till it comes back to me"(Shakespeare) he wants the citizens to believe that Caesar was a noble and trustworthy man. This makes the citizens question Brutus when he said, " Censure me in your wisdom, and awake your senses that you may be the better judge... not that I loved Caesar less, but I loved Rome more (Shakespeare)". Brutus underestimated how powerful of a speech that Antony was able to deliver without breaking his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Ethos, Pathos, And Logos Today I am here to take about Ethos, pathos, and Logos and how my discourse community influenced my use of these devices to join other communities. If you do not know what a discourse community is, then it is a group of people who share knowledge of a particular topic, similar backgrounds and experiences etc. my discourse community was High school broadcasting which for most students they would never join because it is a very tech–savvy class. At our school the announcements were not done by an administrator, we had video feed to every classroom in which the broadcasting class would do the news and create humorous shorts to inform and entertain anyone who was watching .Our job as a class was to inform students on a day to day basis,...show more content... As well about half the students did not take us seriously. So with those in mind we had to build up our credibility. In the beginning of the year we had to start with factual pieces which we brought the students peers to react to videos like the iPhone 6 plus bend test in which I was in charge of. We got great reactions and we got students to actually watch the show. As well as showing quotes from important people and/or organizations. Students would actually believe and understand what we were showing and were being informed. On top of that we got each episode checked for credible by administers which we always passed. From these experience in broadcasting I learned how to use ethos quite effectively. Broadcasting taught me that without ethos you do not have anywhere to begin. If no one sees that you are credible then no one will listen to you in your discourse community. It is important to show credibility without there is nowhere to start. This transferred to my own way of using ethos to in the beaginnig show and strengthen my credibility early on so people keep listening. It is easy to just say a few facts but as our audience are high school students we had to gain their attention via aesthetic appeal. When I mean is keep high school students interested in the show and not go on their phones. If we could not connect to them then I would utterly make us useless that is why we use pathos to keep the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Marc Anthony's Use Of Ethos Pathos Logos The use of the persuasion elements of pathos, logos, and ethos by the characters of julius caesar was very important in terms of the series of events that occurred. The most persuasive characters in the book are brutus, antony, and cassius. Each of these three characters used pathos, logos and ethos throughout the book But each of them only really stood out with their use of one of the three. The ability of Marc to persuade the people of Rome who were against him to believe in his point of view showed incredible use of pathos. While, Cassius's use of ethical appeal in his dialogue to brutus showed a fascinating usage of three elements but mainly ethos. And finally, brutus showed the best use of logos with his speech to cassius and the conspirators....show more content... "You all did love him once, not without cause, what cause withholds you then to mourn for him? O judgement thou art fled to brutish beasts and men have lost reason" (3.3.100–103).In here, Marc anthony uses pathos to remind Romans how they once felt about caesar, and how they should not feel joy over his death because of this. This is the best example of pathos in the story because It had such a strong appeal to the emotions of The roman people that It gave Anthony an advantage over the conspirators. Though Anthony wasn't allowed to speak ill of the conspirators, He was very persuasive in giving hints and reaching to the emotions of the people with the use of mainly pathos. Another strong example of pathos In MArc anthony's speech was later on "But yesterday the word of caesar might have stood against the world; now lies he there. And none so poor to do him reverence" (3.2.116–118). This is also a great example of pathos because of the guilt feeding involved in it. Anthony says this as a way to try and make romans feel guilty about not immediately mourning for caesar, As he knows he can make them go against the conspirators if they feel guilty Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Pathos, Logos, and Ethos in Advertising Essay What captures the attention of people when they view an advertisement, commercial or poster? Is it the colors, a captivating phrase or the people pictured? While these are some of the elements often employed in advertising, we can look deeper and analyze the types of appeals that are utilized to draw attention to certain advertisements. The persuasive methods used can be classified into three modes. These modes are pathos, logos, and ethos. Pathos makes an appeal to emotions, logos appeals to logic or reason and ethos makes an appeal of character or credibility. Each appeal can give support to the message that is being promoted. For example, to make people aware that breast cancer can affect even young women, thefaceofbreastcancer.com...show more content... This poster urges the importance of getting examined early so the risk of breast cancer greatly diminishes. One anti–smoking poster shows merely a pair of hands holding a revolver. Instead of bullets the hands are using cigarettes to load the weapon. Listed in small print on one side of the poster are numerous conditions that may be related to smoking, such as fatal heart attacks, emphysema, cancer, and gum disease. The phrase "Smoking kills... so why bother starting" is printed in large font at the bottom of the poster. The message of this poster is clear: Don't Smoke. The poster is trying to portray that smoking is like holding a loaded weapon. Just as someone would be endangering their life with the loaded gun, they would also be endangering their life with the use of cigarettes. The consequences and health issues associated with smoking can be just as deadly as those of the gun. Ultimately, if someone smokes they are putting their life at risk. Therefore, the logical act is to never start smoking. Finally, a poster from the Centers for Disease Control and the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance features Katie Couric, a well known news broadcast personality, framing her face with her hands. The question, "Are you the picture of health?' is printed on the left of the poster. Couric's quote, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Ethos Pathos And Logos An efficient persuasive essay should contain a multitude of elements in order to support claims and establish credibility. The three terms Pathos, Ethos and Logos are rhetorical appeals used specifically for persuasion. Each of these terms is useful in arguing a point, or persuading a reader to observe a topic in your favor. Pathos originates from the Greek language, and is translated into "suffering." This appeal is most commonly used to adhere to the senses, such as a person's emotions, needs, and values. A good example of pathos is referring to one's country as "motherland" in order to evoke feelings of patriotism. However, using Pathos as an appeal in an essay can either be a hit or a miss. One should only use Pathos if it strongly supports Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Pathos Logos Pathos, Ethos, and Logos, the foundation of persuasive writing and speaking, fill the world's media and literature. On television, one will have to wait only a few seconds before seeing an advertisement utilize one or more of these tactics. In the newspaper, nearly every article is strewn with various uses of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos. The summer reading sources are no exception, as they use a combination of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos to persuade their audiences. Despite the differences in formality and content, the authors of each summer reading text use Pathos, emotions, to convince their audience. By using personal stories and imagery, the authors are able to trigger the emotions of the reader, making the readers more susceptible to their message. In "Let America Be America Again", Hughes shows glimpses into the depressing lives of minorities to connect with the reader's emotions. Though he fabricates descriptions of other people's lives, he uses personal pronoun "I" to provide a more intimate picture of the people he describes. Hughes writes, "I am the man who never got ahead, the poorest worker bartered through the years" (Hughes). The personal story of the man's life evokes sympathy and likely causes the reader to better understand his point of view. Blanco and uses this same tactic in AmГ©rica, as he tells of specific times in which he struggled with adapting to American culture. • 13. Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos This text of mine has been written using mostly logos, some pathos, and a pinch of ethos. I have split my text up in different segments. In each segment there is a different combination of mostly one or two different persuasive modes. the text is made of seven segments. The first segment is an intro. at first, I tell the home secretary about the problem (abuse of law), I do that by telling them what I have witnessed, and what I have seen by going from factory to factory, the source (me) is reliable because I have an authority over the situation, this is because I am an inspector, this means that the first segment uses ethos as a form of appeal, because ethos is the use of authority as reliability. The next two segments are used to give out facts, this information is given to show consequences that the problem could unfold. This form of appeal is heavily relying on logos. Which is an appeal that relies on logical thinking and well–informed opinions....show more content... I then describe the children's life's as sad and exhausting. These two segments use ethos and pathos. First, I make sure that the reader respects me as an authority that would not manipulate the sources, I have already done that, because I have established at the first segment that the position as an inspector gives me liability. Then I use my liability to effectively make my reader emotional, by using pathos. Though I did not overuse pathos, because it would make my letter seem unprofessional which would ruin the credibility as an inspector. Pathos is the use of emotional events or stories, which I use many times during all my segments to make sure that the reader is always emotionally attached to the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos Aristotle's three forms of proof are ethos, pathos, and logos. Aristotle created these three forms of proof to strengthen persuasion and provide rhetorical principles that allow for stronger analyzation of arguments. Ethos focuses on the "personal character" of the speaker attempting to establishing the means of persuasion. This proof aims attempts to analyze the actual credibility of the speaker. The credibility of this speaker can be formed through previous experience or the messaging techniques that create the reasons as to why the audience should trust this person on a proposed topic. Depending on the way that speaker presents themselves, they can achieve persuasion when they can establish a strong "personal character...[that] make[s] us think ...show more content... This approach works on the attempting to create a feeling or set a tone of emotion during the speech. The goals of this proof are to get the audience to resonate with the speaker from an emotional standpoint. A "speech that stirs up emotions" and "produces [some sort of] effect" in the eyes of the audience is expressing the use of pathos (Mueller, 90). A good example of pathos approach is a humanitarian guest speaker for a non–profit fundraising event. This approach is excising pathos because the speaker is using emotional appeal to resonate with the audience in attempts that they will donate to this cause. The last of Aristotle's proof is logos which attempts to appeal to logical explanations. This proof focuses on "the speech itself when we have proved a truth or an apparent truth by means of persuasive arguments" (Mueller, 90). In other words, logos appeal to the fundamental details of the persuasive argument. Logos appeals to truth, evidence, and text to persuade the audience that what is being said is logical. An example of logos would be an attorney restating evidence in a closing argument to appeal to the logical facts of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Logos, Ethos, And Pathos Essay According to our texts and lectures, a good argument must be valid and strong, with evidence or premises, and a conclusion. The premises must be true and of quality, supported by reasoning or evidence of some sort. The premises must also logically support the conclusion or there would be no argument. The goal of an argument is to convince the reader to believe in something and to demonstrate that with careful reasoning and consideration, the writer 's point of view is legitimate. The key approaches of reasoning in an argument are persuasion tactics called logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is the use of logic to persuade the reader with statements containing rational principles. Facts, such as statistics, or anything that can be proven is an appeal to logos. Ethos is a plan of action using ethics which help define credibility, reliability, and character through direct knowledge and/or experience in the situation at hand. Ethos is used by writers to build trust and to demonstrate their qualifications for the statements they make. Pathos is used to connect with the reader on an emotional level using tragedy, sadness, pity, and other sentimental specifics the reader can relate to. All three of these Greek artistic proofs are used in the readings of "Out Of Body Image," by an assistant professor of politics at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Caroline Heldman, whom focuses her work on issues of gender and race, and "X–Large Boys," by Allisa Quart, who is a graduate of Columbia Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Aristotle came up with a useful set of principals used in persuading. Those principals, ethos, pathos, and logos are most commonly seen in the media. When being used in the media two of Aristotle's principals become more useful, while one falls behind. Ethos, being the one that falls behind by not appealing to a wide variety of the public. While, in the media, pathos, the emotional appeal, and logos, the logical appeal, are the most effective. One of the more effective is the pathos appeal. When using pathos the media is hitting the broadest population of listeners and readers. Everyone uses there emotions so it persuades everyone in one way or another. Logos can use opinions to persuade, but most are informed opinions This appeals to the intellect of the reader or listener. This would an important appeal because unlike the other appeals it has credibility behind it. Whatever the media is trying to sell wether it is a product or persuading someone on a matter it becomes more believable. An example of a logos appeal was the ads during the campaign for presidency. Barack Obama and John Mcain would use backed up opinions and facts about themselves and there opponent. His family gets killed shortly after being captured and John immediately turns to the Lord. John tries to appeal to the reader's emotions by talking about how his family died, but he is thankful that the Lord kept him alive and gave him clothing "for though some were so cruel and barbarous as to take and carry to the door two of my children and murder them, as also a negro women; yet they gave me liberty to put on my clothes, keeping me bound with a cord on one arm"(12). By using pathos John William persuades the reader to always have faith in the Lord even in bad times, and he makes sure the reader knows from the start that keeping your faith is the most important thing especially in the worst of times "that we might have grace to glorify his name, whether in life or death; and, as I was able, committed our state to God" (12). Ethos is used in the story as well, the way John uses it is by talking about all the positive things that has happened to him while he is in captivity. He once again uses his faith, basically saying the reader should listen to him because his undying faith is saving him. By continuously talking about all the positive things that are happening to him during such a bad time he is giving examples as to why you should believe Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 19. Examples Of Ethos Pathos Logos Ethos, pathos, and logos are three means of persuasion used in written and oral communications. Ethos, also known as the ethical appeal, is a technique used to convince an audience whether or not the writer or speaker is creditable. When an auto mechanic describes a problem with a car's engine, he uses ethos to persuade the owner of the car that a new air filter is needed. The next mode of persuasion is pathos, which uses emotion to influence an audience. By creating a common sense of identity, a writer can reach a reader on an emotional level. An example of this is when a writer discusses something that he/she has in common with the reader.
