Summary
• Xiaoliuqiu, Little Liuqiu, or Lamay
Island (Chinese: 小琉球; pinyin: Xiǎo Liúqiú) is an
island belonging to Taiwan administered as Liuqiu
Township (琉球鄉; Liúqiú Xiāng) of Pingtun County
• It has an area of 6.8 km² and lies 15 km
(8 nautical miles) west of Donggang;
• it is Taiwan's only large coral island.
• The eight villages on the island are populated by
approximately 13,000 residents with 10 shared
surnames.

Etymology and names
• Xiaoliuqiu has been known by a number of names in its history.
• Lamay (also Lambay or Lamey), formerly the most common English
name for the island, is a name that most probably originates from
a Taiwanese aboriginal language.
• Golden Lion Island is another historical English name for the
island. Two years prior to the beginning of Dutch rule in Taiwan, a Dutch
ship named the Golden Lion : Gouden Leeuw) was wrecked on the
coral reefs of the isle.
• After the Dutch took control of the island, they renamed it Gouden
Leeuwseylant ("Golden Lion Island") as a memorial to the crew who
were killed by the native inhabitants.
• After the Republic of China took control of Taiwan, the island was
administrated under the name Liuqiu Township as a part of Pingtung
County, the only island township of the county.

resulting in the formation of thinning,
similar to the shape of the vase, with
the top of the rock covered with Premna
serratifolia Linn. Which known as 臭娘子.

蛤板湾 – Geban Bay

Geban Bay(Venice Beach)
• Ryukyu Island coast is mainly
coral reef rocky shore.
• Geban Bay is a shell sand beach,
about 100 meters long, and people
can be close to the sea,enjoying
activities like snorkeling,
swimming, water and other
recreational activities.
• In addition, the Geban Bay is
facing the West, and so visitors
can enjoy the beauty of the
sunset.

乌鬼洞 - Black Dwarf Cave
• At the far south of Liu Qiu’s west coast ,
Black Dwarf Cave or some may say (Black
Ghost Cave) is a string of eroded seaside
grottoes connected by a well-built pathway
that offers sublime sea views.
The caves macabre name come from a
massacre by the Dutch of local cave-
dwelling aborigines in retaliation for the
slaying of some Dutch sailors.

山猪沟 - Wild Boar Ditch
• Wild boar Ditch or Mountain Pig
Ditch is a narrow labyrinth of
coral cliffs choked by overhanging
tree roots , and to be said that
wild boar have roamed around here.
• At the cliffs , along the
pathway ,well into the so called
ditch , are some small rock houses
where locals sought shelter from a
US bombing during the World War II.
