This document discusses coronaviruses, including SARS. It notes that coronaviruses are spherical or pleomorphic enveloped RNA viruses that were first isolated from cases of the common cold. Coronaviruses are classified into four types, including types that cause common colds in mammals and birds. SARS is a new coronavirus identified in 2002 that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome. SARS has an incubation period of around 10 days and begins with fever and cough, often leading to pneumonia-like changes seen on chest imaging.
3. A group of spherical/pleomorphic
enveloped RNA virus.
Has petal or club shaped peplomers-
fringe of surface projection………………
hence the name
1st isolated from cases of common cold
5. Groups
• Acid labile virus- common cold like illness
• Acid stable virus- gastroenteritis
Common cold
• 2nd most common cause of common cold (winters)
• Incubation period: 2-5 days
• Resulting immunity low recurrence
11. The epidemic was identified by Dr. Carlo
Urbani……………………………… died of it
This is considered new- Ab absent in
serum collected previous yr
MOT- droplets or aerosol of pt
IP- 10 days
Begins as fever with cough
Chest radiography- pneumonia like
changes
12. Specimen collection- Respiratory (deep cough sputum)
specimens are collected in viral transport medium.
Virus Isolation-
• 1st isolation- organ culture human embryonic trachea
• Fastidious and difficult to grow on cell culture system
• Most grow only on organ culture and with minimal cytopathic
effect
• African green monkey (Vero E6) cell monolayer
Viral RNA Detection- PCR
Ab detection
• IgG and IgM
• ELISA, CFT and NT
