2. ❖Systems employed for motion control are called as drives.
❖It may employ any of prime movers such as diesel or
petrol engine, gas or steam turbine, steam engine,
hydraulic motors and electric motors, for supplying
mechanical energy for motion control.
❖Drives employing electric motors are called as Electrical
Drives.
5. ➢ Based on Supply
AC Motor drives
AC drive is a device used to control the speed of an electricmotor such as a three-phase inductionmotor by
changingthe frequencyof the electricalsupplyto the motor.
AC drive is also calledVariableFrequencyDrive (VFD) orVariableSpeedDrive (VSD).
DC Motor drives
It is basicallyspeedcontrolsystem of a DC electricalmotor that suppliesvoltage to the motor to operate at
desired speed.
DC drives are classifiedas analogDC drives and digitalDC drives.
DigitalDC drive can offer precisioncontrol.
➢ Based on Number of Motors
There are three types availableinthis category. They are
Individual
There willbe a separate drive motor for various parts of a machine.
Example: Lathe machine.
Multi Motor
Separate motors are providedfor actuating differentparts of a machine.
Example:Cranes.
Group Drive
In a group drive, one motor is used as a drive for two or several machines.
The motor is connectedby a singleshaft, other machinesare connectedto the shaft by belts and pulleys.
Group drive is most economical.
6. ➢ Based on Speed
There are two types availablein this category. They are
Constant Speed drive
Machinetools require more or less constant speed drives, squirrelcage inductionmotor alongwith the
manual controlsare used.
Variable Speed drive
The main purpose of variable speed drive is to controlspeed along with acceleration, deceleration, torque
and finallythe directionof machine.
They are used to reduce power consumption.
➢ Based on Control Parameters
There are three types availableinthis category. They are
Vector Control Drive
Vector control is most accurate than anyother kind of variable frequencydrive (VFD).
In this control mode, torque and speed controlledusingpulse width modulation (PWM) techniques in
an inverter.
These are used forAC synchronousand inductionmotors.
Constant Power Drive
When a motor while carryingrated current in its armature provides constantpower at all speedsin a certain
range of speed control it is known as constantpower drive in that range of speed control.
Constant Torque Drive
Constant torque load type drive is distinctivewhen fixed volumes are beinghandled.
Examplesare screw compressors,feeders, and conveyors.
