TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
 Electric induction motors run at fixed speeds and are ideally suited to applications
where a constant motor output speed is required. However, there are some
applications where varying motor output speeds are preferable, better meeting the
requirements of the load.
 The flow or speed is reduced by using dampers or valves and gears, the
consequent power reduction of the motor is small and so the method is not as
energy efficient as it could be.
 A variable speed drive (VSD), also known as a frequency converter, adjustable
speed drive or inverter, is an electronic device that controls the characteristics of a
motor’s electrical supply. Therefore, it is able to control the speed and torque of a
motor, achieving a better match with the process requirements of the machine it is
driving.
 VSDs are supplied in a wide range of sizes from 0.18kW through to several MW
and may be optimized to suit particular applications.
 VSDs are typically 92–95% efficient with 5–8% losses, the losses are usually
compensated for by the saving .
Variable speed drive
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
 RECTIFIER: The rectifier changes the incoming alternating current
(AC) supply to direct current (DC). The type of rectifier used can vary
depending on the type of performance required from the drive. It can also
control the direction of power flow.
 INTERMEDIATE CIRCUIT: The rectified DC supply is then
conditioned in the intermediate circuit, normally by a combination of
inductors and capacitors. Over 98% of drives currently in the marketplace
use a fixed voltage DC link.
 INVERTER: The inverter converts the rectified and conditioned DC
back into an AC supply of variable voltage and frequency. This is normally
done with a semiconductor switch.
 CONTROL UNIT: The control unit gives and receives signals to the
rectifier, the intermediate circuit and the inverter to correctly operate the
equipment.
SELECTINGA VARIABLE SPEED
DRIVE
When considering fitting a VSD to a motor, there are a number
of issues to consider:
 Type of torque
 Whether a VSD is necessary
 Size required
 Type of control needed
 Potential savings
APPLICATIONS FOR VARIABLE SPEED
DRIVES
The potential for energy saving through the use of
VSDs is dependent on the characteristics of the load
being driven.
There are three main types of load:
 Variable torque applications
 Constant power applications
 Constant torque applications
VARIABLE TORQUE
APPLICATION
When a low torque is required at low
speed and higher torque required at high
speed. These applications are generally
centrifugal loads such as fans, pumps
and blowers. These are good targets for
energy savings.
CONSTANT POWER
APPLICATION
 When a high torque is required at low
speed and low torque required at high
speed. Typical applications include
machine tools, traction.
CONSTANT TORQUE
APPLICATION
When the same amount of torque is
required at low speed as at high speed.
Power is directly proportional to speed.
Typical applications include conveyors,
mixers, screw feeders, extruders and
positive displacement pumps.
Energy saving from different load
types
FANS
 Dampers are often used to regulate the output of
fans, reducing the speed of the fan is a much more
energy efficient way of achieving the same effect.
 With damper control, the input power reduces as
the flow rate decreases. However, under VSD
control, the variable torque characteristic of the fan
means that the relationship between flow and the
speed of the fan is such that the input power
reduces with the speed reduction.
Comparison of speed reduction in
fans using dampers and VSDs
Flow rate changes using
dampers compared with using
VSDs

flow controlled by a variable
speed drive
PUMPS
 In a similar way to using damper control in fan applications, using
throttle control for pumping applications results in a poor efficiency
as the pump is not being run at its design point.
 Using a VSD to control the pump rather than using simple throttle
control can result in significant power and therefore cost savings.
 Typical examples of pump applications for VSDs include boiler
feedwater pumps and product flow pumps, such as chemicals or
inks
