Work Experience
Current Situation: Since January 2017, I have been an Approved Driving Instructor and,
since December 2014, I have been working as a private tutor (maths and English up to GCSE
level as well as history and social sciences). I also work as a part-time Examiner and
examination paper writer for Pearson Edexcel, something I have been doing since July 2010.
January 2015 – December 2016: Part-time mathematics tutor at Ruskin College, Oxford. My
main duties were to teach and assess basic mathematics (working with adult learners).
February 2015 – February 2016: Secondary school supply teaching in Buckinghamshire and
Oxfordshire.
September 2002 – October 2014: Full-time lecturer at HMP Bullingdon, an adult male
prison. I taught adult basic numeracy, adult basic literacy and Personal and Social
Development. In addition to my teaching role, I co-ordinated functional skills from 2011 to
2014.
September 2001 – July 2002: In full-time teacher training at Oxford Brookes University. My
practice placement involved teaching literacy and numeracy to learners with learning
difficulties and disabilities at Abingdon and Witney College.
August 1998 – July 2001: English and Mathematics Teacher at the Agriculture and Natural
Resources Institute of Southern Belize under the auspices of the charitable organisation VSO
(Voluntary Service Overseas). Based in a secondary school which specialised in agriculture,
my duties involved teaching and providing pastoral support to groups of teenage learners
with emotional and behavioural difficulties, with an additional role involving sharing skills
with colleagues.
September 1994 – July 1998: Learning Support Assistant at Oxford College of Further
Education. Duties involved supporting lecturers in the classroom in meeting the educational

difficulties, and also supporting such learners outside the classroom as they developed

December 1988 – September 1994: I held a variety of posts, some paid and some voluntary,

Leonard Cheshire Foundation and SCOPE.

MA degree in Education awarded by the Open University (1997). The main areas of focus
were the sociology of education and the psychology of learning and development, especially
language and literacy.
