Bond Performance
Bond Strength = Adhesion + Cohesion
Adhesion = attraction between adhesive and substrates
Adhesion affected by substrate:
• Surface energy, surface prep, roughness,
contamination, additives
Adhesion affected by adhesive:
• Chemistry, cure speed, viscosity
Cohesion = internal strength of the adhesive
Cohesion affected by adhesive:
• Chemistry, crosslink density, modulus, tensile
strength, cure profile

Mechanisms of Adhesion
Chemical
• Via molecular contact at the surface of the substrate
• Strongest mechanism of adhesion
• Primary interactions: metallic < covalent ≤ ionic
• Secondary interactions: van der Waals < hydrogen bonding < Lewis acid/base
Mechanical Interlocking
• Adhesive flows into the pores of the substrate’s surface – creating a “lock and key”
• Physical impediment to crack propagation at the interface
• An increase in the surface area – more contact = more interactions = higher strength
Diffusion
• Polymer in adhesive is capable of entangling with polymer in substrate
• Interface is created with entangled polymer chains (i.e., interpenetrating networks)
• Common with difficult-to-bond low surface energy materials (e.g., polypropylene)
Electrostatic
• Charged surface of the adhesive is drawn towards the oppositely charged substrate
• Most common in tape applications

Key Criteria for Adhesion
❑ Pick an adhesive with a surface tension less than the critical wetting tension
of the adherend
❑ At some time during the bonding operation the adhesive should have a
viscosity that is relatively low
❑ The adhesive and the adherend should be brought together in a rate and
manner that should assist in the displacement of any trapped air
❑ For a proper adhesive bond, weak boundary layers need to be removed
(surface prep)
Kinloch (1987)
The adhesive needs to completely wet out the adherends

Key Structural Terms
Work Life
Also called open time, pot life. The time you have between initially
mixing the adhesive and clamping your bond in place.
Time to
handling strength
Also called clamp time; initial cure time. The time it takes for the
adhesive to reach a minimum of 50 PSI (0.34 MPa) overlap shear
strength. Generally, after this time is reached you can remove the
clamps and proceed to the next manufacturing operation.
Full cure time
Time for adhesive to become fully cured at room temperature. This is
the point at which the parts can be tested.

(absorbs oils into the bondline) so least
sensitive to surface preparation
• Most have a noticeably pungent odor
• Chemistries tend to be rigid
• Lower resistance to solvents and
temperature extremes
• Will exotherm during cure; more off
gassing
• Cause bond line readthrough on thin
panels
• Many formulations require refrigeration to
maintain shelf life

Overview:
Bond to most traditional materials such as concrete
and wood as well as many engineered plastics.
Performance:
• Better aesthetics without a visible bond line
• Variety of open times
• Bond and protect simultaneously
• Bonds provide the strength or flexibility to resist
shock, vibration and impact loads
Urethanes adhere to a wide variety of
materials, including wood, concrete,
rubber and many plastics
Urethanes provide better product
appearance by bonding different
materials without the bond line being
visible through the substrate
Flexibility allows urethanes to
absorb shocks and thermal
expansion differences between
dissimilar materials
NVH
Aesthetics
Primary applications:
• Composite panel bonding with a
class A surface – no read-through
of adhesive
• Glass bonding – adhesive’s low
modulus allows for fluctuations in
temperature
• Potting applications requiring
flexible adhesive

Start here. What is the customer assembling and how should it
be categorized? What are the overall performance needs of the assembly?
What type of materials is your customer trying to stick together?
What is the current process? Should our solution fit into the current
process or can we improve this for the customer?
How and where is the final product used?
Which solution would best meet these demands?
What is the overall cost of the application (labor, materials, workflow, etc.)?

Identifying Opportunities
• “Who is responsible for making design & process changes?”
• “What are the substrates that you are working with? How much surface prep are you able/
willing to do?”
• “Have you experienced production or re-work challenges in the past? Tell me more about that.”
• “What do you wish you could do differently or better about this part or assembly?”
• “Do you have any trouble staffing skilled welding & grinding positions? How much time is spent
finishing parts after welding?”
• “What part of your process do you have the hardest time training your operators on?”

Glossary
Extrude To force a fluid out through a hole or orifice.
Fixturing Time
The period between the end of the work life and the time the assembly reaches
handling strength.
Handling Strength/
Handling Time
The typical time required for a bond to gain enough strength to move to the next
processing step.
Modulus
A measure of the resistance of a material to deformation at a given strain rate. A high
modulus material will behave as a more “rigid” material than a lower modulus material.
Open Time
The period after a liquid adhesive is dispensed before the bond must be assembled.
Same as Work Life.
Reaction Kinetics The rate of change of a chemically reactive system.
Rheology The study of how materials flow.
Thermomechanical Relating to the thermal and mechanical properties of materials.
Viscosity A measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow, or its “thickness.”
Work Life or Open Time
The period after a liquid adhesive is dispensed before the bond must be assembled. It
may also refer to the nozzle life of a mixed adhesive.
