3. There are three kinds of Preposition.
1. Simple Preposition
2. Compound Preposition
3. Phrasal/Group Preposition
4. Simple Preposition = These are most commonly
used Preposition they include at , by , for, in, off, on,
out, through, till, to up, with etc.
Compound Preposition = These are usually formed
by prefixing a preposition to a noun, adjective or
adverb. These include ‘about’ above, across, along,
amidst, amongst, around, before, behind, beneath,
beside, etc
Phrasal/Group Preposition = These are formed by
joining two or more words.
These include like according to in accordance with in a
place of agreeable to, in addition to, in reference to,
along with in , behalf of etc
5. Following are the usage of some important
Preposition are given below.
(a) ‘At’ = At is used for precise time .
( at 3 clock , at noun, at noon, at bed time
etc)
1 – That Shop Closes at midnight.
2- For a point (at the corner, at the door, at the
entrance etc)
As- the shop is at the end of the lane.
3- at used for small place , town etc
As- He lives at sheket in pryagraj .
6. (b) ‘In’ -
1 - In used for months , year, centuries and
long periods. (in may, in summer, in 1990,
in the ice age etc)
As- there should be a lot progress in the next
century .
2 – In used for an enclosed space ( in the garden,
in Delhi , in a building etc)
As- Do you work in a company ?
3 – In used for big place, town, city, country, etc
As- A temple is situated at madurai in tamil nadu.
7. (c) ‘On’ –
1 - On is used for Days and Dates (on Sunday , on
25th January, on Christmas day etc)
As – Where will you be in Independence day ?
2 – On used for existing position and movement
As – Snow fell on the hills
(d) To =
To is used for direction and destination or comparison
.
As- < Turn to the right (direction)
< I am going to jaipur (destination)
< They prefer hockey to socar (Comparision)
8. (e) ‘from’ -
1 – From is normally used with to or till/untill.
As- the guest lecture is from 2Pm to 3 Pm
2 – from can also be used for place
As – he is from Saharanpur.
(f) ‘Since’ –
Since is generally used in perfect and perfect
continuous tense with point of time (when
the action started)
As – We have been living here since 2002.
9. (g) ‘for’ –
For is also in perfect and perfect continuous tense
with the period of time. (The total duration for
which the action continuous)
As- Situ has been waiting for the bus for half an hour
.
h) ‘By’ –
1 - By is used to express the deadline.
As- You must complete your work by this evening
2- By is used with all kind of vechicles .
As- I usually go to office by bus.
3- By is used for agents .
As- the letter was written by Ram with pencil
10. (i) ‘Into’ –
Into used when things are going inside from
outside .
As- The boy jumped into the river.
(j) Upon – Upon used to show the Continous
with action.
As- Sonu was keeping the bottle upon the table
(k) ‘Over’ – Over is used when a thing is
exactly upwards some other thing is above
something and not touching it.
As- there is bridge over the river.
11. (l) ‘above’ –
when some is at a higher level then some other
thing
As- < Her level of intelligence is above all .
< we were flying above the clouds.
(m) ‘Under’ –
Under is used when something is exactly below
some other thing and the two things are not
touching each other .
As – a man sat under the tree.
(n) ‘Beneath’ –
beneath is used when a things is under some other
thing and it touching its surface.
As- There are many minerals beneath the Earth.
12. (o) ‘below’ –
Below is used when some thing is at a lower
level than some other thing.
As- a river is a flowing below the mountains is
that picture
(p) ‘Towards’-
Towards is used to refer a direction
As- This road goes to towards this home
(v) ‘Across’ –
Across denotes expansion.
As- their business is spread across the country

It is used to denote towards the back of
something.
As- he is sitting behind me.
(s) ‘Between’-
Between is used for two Persons/things.
As- Ram is sitting between vibhu and pushkar
(t) ‘Among’ –
Among is used for more than two person/things.
As- Soniya is the tallest among all girls.
14. (u) ‘For’ –
For is used for purpose and reason.
As- all these toys are for you
(v) ‘with’ –
With is used to show relation of tools with action .
As – < She cuts clothes with scissors.
< I m writing a letter with a pen.
(w) ‘In front of ‘ –
In front of is used for at the face of something
As – there is an ice-cream shop in front of my
house
