Globally, foodborne diseases caused by contaminated food affect over 550 million people each year, resulting in 230,000 deaths. In children under 5 years old, 40% contract foodborne illnesses. Nationally in Malaysia, a food poisoning incident sickened 849 students across 16 schools in Sabah, and 16 athletes at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games were affected by a stomach bug. Food poisoning can cause death if not treated properly. To cure it, one should avoid greasy or spicy foods, stay hydrated by drinking water, get plenty of rest, and see a doctor if symptoms last for days.
