1. Use of MOODLE software
For SAE theurl is http://117.239.41.163
Log with your userid and password.
For SE on-line exam we need to have 2 mark questions and 1 mark questions. We would like to have
these questions Unitwise. My suggestion is to create Unitwise and marks wise category of questions. As
an example all questions pertaining to Unit I with 2marks will be stored in category of “Unit I - MCQs-
Two mark questions”.
1. How to create Category?
Go to Setttings ; Question bank and Click on Categories
Moodle will show you all the categories available. At the end it gives you provision to add a
category.Enter the parent categoryname(in the example, as we want to create MCQs belonging to
Discrete structures, I have chosen, the Parent category as Discrete Structures), name of the
category (in the e.g. “Unit I-MCQs -Two Mark questions”) and enter the information about the
category, then Click on “ Add Category”.
You will see that a new category is created.
2. 2. How to create Questions.
You can directly create one question at a time. Choose
Click on Create a new question.
Choose Multiple choice option and then press NEXT.
Category -- Fill / choose the category name under which you want to store this question.
(Unit I-MCQs-Two Marks questions)
Enter the question name. (it can be same as the question itself. This name is meant for you only).
(Inclusion and exclusion)
In the Question Text, you enter the actual question.
(In a group of 191 students, 10 are taking French, business and music; 36 are taking
French and business; 20 are taking French and music; 18 are taking business and music;
65 are taking French; 76 are taking business; and 63 are taking music; How many are
taking French and music but not business?)
This block of text can be formatted, you can insert pictures etc. In this block you will see
formatting buttons , somewhat similar to Word processor.
Formatting options
3. Default question grade is the number of marks for this question. Here I entered 2 as I am
creating a question with two marks.
Do you have any penalty factor? If the student answers the question incorrectly do you want to
give him negative marks? Then mention the negative marks. Here. I gave 0.5 , so if the student
answers the question incorrectly he will lose 0.5 marks.
Some of the MCQs, can be set in such a way that you will have more than one right answer. So
far I had questions where there is only one answer.
Even if the same question is given to two students, do you want to shuffle the options (A,B,C&D)
. I normally want to do this. So I click on this option.
Chose the way options appear (A,B,C&D , or a,b,c& d, etc.)
Now you have set up the question. You need to enter the different options for the solutions.
Those are the Choice 1, Choice2 , Choice 3 and Choice 4 etc.
Enter the answer / statement you want to display for choice 1 in the answer field.
If this answer is correct answer, then for Grade choose 100%, otherwise leave it as NONE.
Complete all the 4 choices. (assuming you have only 4 choices. If you have more than 4 choices,
fill in all those choices. As you have considered only one answer is correct, for only one choice
you give grade as 100%)
Click on Save changes button. The question gest loaded into the system.
Edit
You can use the edit button to edit a specific question. You can review whether question is
displayed properly and whether it accepts the correct option.
3. How to upload questions , from a file.
Under Settings, Question Bank choose, Import
Choose Aiken format for file format.
You create a normal file preferably using a notepad , or if you have created it using
wordprocessor, save it as a text file.
(Refer to google for Aiken format.
4. An example file, (a file which I used for uploading the two mark questions is “Lesson1
MCQs-two mark questions.txt”
For Import category choose the category under which you want these questions to be loaded. I want
to load the questions in “Unit I MCQs-two mark questions” (note that the number in parenthesis
after the category name indicates the number of questions this particular category has).
Then at import file, click on “choose file”
Normally it should give you a screen where you can choose the file name.
Sometimes this screen will be blank. But on the left side, you will a have choice
“Upload a file”. Click on that. Then you will get a screen similar to
Click on the Choose file button. Browse and select the file you want to upload.
You return to this screen again. Now click on the Upload this file.
You will return to the previous screen where you had chosen the category etc.
You will see the name file you had chosen displayed above the Import button.
Now click on Import button.
The questions will be loaded.
5. You may need to edit each question to ensure the formatting, and to ensure that the penalty marks
are set up properly.
4. How to Edit a questions.
Go to the category of questions. And click on the picture of a hand holding a pen infront of the
question you want to edit.
The question is shown as if you are creating the question (Step 2).
Edit the question and save it.
5. How to set up a test..
Go to HOME; COURSES; SAE; COMPUTER ENGINEERING; SE; DS-SE-COMP
As you want to create a quiz for DS SE ;
6. Go to Weekly outline top area. Choose under “Add an activity”

Enable button of “Open Quiz” and “Close Quiz”. You can choose the time for Open and close.
In the example below. The quiz is open to be answered by students between, 00:40 hrs to 15:40 hrs
on 5 July.
You need to Enable time limit and specify how much time the student has to answer the quiz.
In the given example I had set it 30 minutes. A student can attempt the quiz any time between 00:40
hrs& 15:40 hrs. But once he starts answering the quiz, he need to complete the test in 30 minutes.
You can mention how many attemptsallowed the student will be given for attempting the quiz.
Here I have mentioned 1 attempt only.
Grading method will be applicable if you allow the student to attempt more than once.
Question order-- Shuffle Randomly - Two students sitting next to each other will get the same
questions in different order.
New Page:Mention the number of questions per page .In the e.g. I gave 4.
Shuffle within Question : Even if the same question appears for two students, if you want to
change the order of options, then say YES here.(There is one draw back. The order in which options
exist in the Question bank and the order in which these options shown to the student will be
different. So if you are using a manual answer, be careful how you generate the answer keys).
7. Choose the appropriate Review options.
In the overall feedback, You can give feedback to the student, based on his marks.
Press Save and Return
You had set up the frame work for the quiz. Now you need to select the questions which will go into
this quiz.
On the Weekly outline screen click on “Trial Quiz 1”(below News forum) , the quiz which you have
created just now

In the select a category you select Unit I- MCQs –Two mark Questions
Under Add random questions from category choose, 5 (as you want to have 5 questions of two
marks each).
Click on “Add to quiz” A screen where you can edit the questions is shown.
8. As the system is giving only 1 mark for each of these questions and as you want to give 2 marks for
these questions. You need to go to Grade area (circled in red) for each question one at a time
modify the grade to 2 and click on the save button.
As you save this change, you will see total grades (circled in blue)changing properly
For all the 5 questions change the grade and save the change.
Now you can add the questions from “one mark set”
Choose the category Unit I- MCQs- one mark questions”.
Select the number of random questions you want from this category ( I tried 5), and then click on
Add to Quiz.
Now you have10 questions in this quiz. It is ready to used by the students.
