Editor's Notes

  1. Afflict the comfortable- comfort the afflicted. -Finley Peter Dunne
  2. Social Media:Over the past 5 yrs, Social Media has given young people a new way of interaction with one another. - Student journal of media literacy Social Media users: Regular visitors on the Social Media platforms with a minimum of 10 people in your connections, with some interaction activity. http://www.thinkingit.com.au/blog/definition-of-active-users Facebook: Most popular free social networking site falling under the category of love and belongingness. Afflicted: somebody/something that has been affected in an unpleasant or harmful way and has still not gotten the chance to recover. Sensitizing the afflicted: process of inspiring or urging people to have an active action and engagement concerning social issues for development purposes of those who are afflicted in the society Society: Aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community U&G Theory: There have been many research works on uses and gratification theory on the traditional media, and there are some emerging works which highlight the impact of new media over the traditional ones. They also throw light on the fact that motivates individuals to switch from traditional media to new media and what kinds of gratifications these are providing. A key distinguishing feature of new media is interactivity, which describes the ability of users to provide content in response to a source or communication partner. (Ha, 1998) Most research employing a U&G approach focuses on gratifications obtained because they provide insight into what motivates continued use of the medium.
  3. Dunu: Social Media can become an effective and alternative tool for social mobilization, within the context of the unique multiple platform of new forms of engagement it offers to the audience. Dunu: Nigeria Jucaityto: Nigeria Sweetser: Canada Lampe et al: Michigan LaRose: individuals mix and match uses with goals, according to specific context, needs, social backgrounds and so on. Nikita: Social Networking sites provide a platform for discussion on such issues as it is this media which majority mass rely on and extend warm support.
