Introduction to Technology Management
BSTechMgmt
Academic Year 2020 - 2021
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, the student will be
able to:
1. Describe the elements of technology
2. Define the role and relationships of
technology
3. Appreciate the importance of managing
technology
Earlier times describe technology as skills handed
down from one generation to another.
During the industrial revolution technology
becomes not only the skill but also the product that
eases the way of doing.
Recently, technology is a concept that,
1. deals with the use of knowledge, tools and
utilities
2. refers to machineries and equipment used by
people
3. describes a system, methods or techniques
4. puts science into practical use in industry
FOUR ELEMENTS OF TECHNOLOGY
1. Technique – the tools, materials and
equipment as applied in the work process.
2. Knowledge – the skills, the intuition and the
experience of doing things.
3. Organization – structuring the work process
according to set of norms.
4. Product – the output of the application of the
other three elements
CLASSIFICATION OF TECHNOLOGY
1. Emerging – technology not yet fully utilized
but has the potential (needs high
level of research expenditure).
2. New – recently introduce causing influence of
the produce of the company.
3. Low – had long been diffused to the society
and utilized by industries to employ low
level of education or skills, manually or
semi automatically operated, does not
need much research and is stable with
little change.
4. Medium – wide set of technologies that fall
between high and low.
5. Appropriate – indicates a good match
between utilization and resources
required for optimum.
6. Tacit – non-articulated knowledge with no
uniformity in its presentation and is
based solely in the experienced of the
developer.
7. Codified – allows people to know how
technology works though analysis,
functionality and causality were
kept by the developer and shaped
by experiences during the process.

3. Appreciate the importance of managing
innovation
Technology Development or innovation at recent
times as product development.
It is an interaction of product and processes, tools
and procedures that gives practical value.
Such as,
1. new production process
2. replacement or substitution of a new or
indigenous material (cheaper)
3. alteration of functions towards increased
efficiency
4. better support lowering product cost
For technology innovation to progress, one must
understand the basic principles and processes that
allow the manipulation of physical environment to
interact with the social forces and put it to use.
STAGES IN THE PROCESS OF TECHNOLOGY
INNOVATION
1. Basic Research – generates knowledge over a
period of time that may or may not
result for specific application
2. Applied Research – directed toward solving
problems through systematic build up
of knowledge that results to
development and implementation
3. Collaboration Teamwork – an essential to
getting things done by coming and
thinking together diverse minds to act
on complex problems and situation and
to arrived at probable solutions
Elements of collaboration:
1. Listening and exploring
2. Learning and adjusting
3. Focus on what to then align
4. Link and leverage
4. Development – human activity that converts
ideas and knowledge into tools,
materials, processes, skills and products
or services for feasibility, design
concept verification and or testing
prototypes
5. Implementation – step by step process

MANAGING INNOVATIONS
To cultivate a culture of sustainable environment,
managing innovation plays a significant role.
It allows organization to respond to new ventures
using its creativity to introduce ideas, products or
services.
The fundamental reason of success in innovation
is management over process and product.
Structured framework for managing human and
cultural elements of change from process
improvements to transformation is to:
1. Define Change that describes a compelling
reason and identifies prospective disruptions.
2. Build Change Agent Capacity by developing
an adept network of implementers at the
local level.
3. Assess Environment through identification of
barriers.
4. Mentor a network that reinforces desired
behaviors.
5. Create target readiness that manages
resistance to change.
6. Build a Communication Plan that allows
multiple delivery of targets communicated
down to local level with built-in feedback
loops.

3. Practice the assessment process
Technology Assessment refers to a process of
selecting the right tool to create a competitive
advantages to do a job better, faster and more
efficient.
It is a structured process to select a technology
solution that helps solve problem, reduce risks, and
achieve objective.
This is done by:
1. Discovery – understanding the existing
reality that connects the system the
process and the people.
2. Analysis – making use of the information
discovered to fully utilized the stacked
technology.
3. Define and Develop – begin with the end in
mind considering every option and its trade
offs.
4. Document – lay everything on paper and
communicate every detail to everyone.
Never assume it’s perfect, just be flexible.
Discovery assesses the needs through
establishing the requirements:
1. looking into the process identify the
important data, who’s in-charge and the
source of truth
2. understanding the problem in terms of
business and end-user experience
3. understanding people doing the job and
review existing usage.
Analysis test and re-test (plan tests and test
the plan)
1. functionality of current devices
2. applicability at granular level
3. Credibility of prioritized options of filling the
gaps.
Define and develop through the business
vision and operational requirements:
1. the criteria built to hone the needs
2. alignment of people role and function in the
delivery of the process and technology
3. considerations of trade offs in cases of cost
benefit ratio.
Document works down on paper the :
1. overview of what to do (plan)

Technology Diffusion
Introduction to Technology Management
BSTechMgmt
Academic Year 2020 - 2021
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, the student will be
able to:
1. Describe the basic component of
technology assessment
2. Define the attributes needed for the
adaptation of technology
3. Put into use the benefits derived from
managing technology absorption
Technology Diffusion is a process of using the new
technology adopted by firms across different
markets .
It begins by adopting an innovation then gradually
transfer the technology to individuals.
It allows to accumulate knowledge as the drivers of
technology interact with each other thus, builds
investments on decision making and allocation of
resources and until the technology has improved or
lowered its cost.
Sharing of technology is not merely transplanting
the technology from one place to another, it needs
understanding, support, resources and varies
accordingly.
Even by merely copying the technology and putting
it to use, it often requires a stock of indigenous
skill that cannot be easily found.
China introduces gun powder for medicinal
use but Europe use it for cannons and
firearms.
This indicates that when technology is transferred
from one country to another modifications were
made for it to work considering:
1. Human and material resources are not
equal
2. Results are not always desirable
3. Poorer countries need technologies that
create human jobs and not to replace
human jobs
4. Technologies were chosen by small
groups in power rather than by those in
need.
The adoption decision always depend on the
factors that affect investment decisions:
1. benefits
2. costs
3. risks and uncertainty
4. environment and institutions (market
regulations
Benefits depend on:
1. Closeness of substitute technologies
2. Networks and standards
3. Experience and learning
4. Adopter skills

Recently, technology is a concept that, 1. deals with the use of knowledge, tools and utilities 2. refers to machineries and equipment used by people 3. describes a system, methods or techniques 4. puts science into practical use in industry FOUR ELEMENTS OF TECHNOLOGY 1. Technique – the tools, materials and equipment as applied in the work process. 2. Knowledge – the skills, the intuition and the experience of doing things. 3. Organization – structuring the work process according to set of norms. 4. Product – the output of the application of the other three elements CLASSIFICATION OF TECHNOLOGY 1. Emerging – technology not yet fully utilized but has the potential (needs high level of research expenditure). 2. New – recently introduce causing influence of the produce of the company. 3. Low – had long been diffused to the society and utilized by industries to employ low level of education or skills, manually or semi automatically operated, does not need much research and is stable with little change. 4. Medium – wide set of technologies that fall between high and low. 5. Appropriate – indicates a good match between utilization and resources required for optimum. 6. Tacit – non-articulated knowledge with no uniformity in its presentation and is based solely in the experienced of the developer. 7. • 13. next back home page Technology Diffusion Introduction to Technology Management BSTechMgmt Academic Year 2020 - 2021 LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the session, the student will be able to: 1. Describe the basic component of technology assessment 2. Define the attributes needed for the adaptation of technology 3. Put into use the benefits derived from managing technology absorption Technology Diffusion is a process of using the new technology adopted by firms across different markets . It begins by adopting an innovation then gradually transfer the technology to individuals. It allows to accumulate knowledge as the drivers of technology interact with each other thus, builds investments on decision making and allocation of resources and until the technology has improved or lowered its cost. Sharing of technology is not merely transplanting the technology from one place to another, it needs understanding, support, resources and varies accordingly. Even by merely copying the technology and putting it to use, it often requires a stock of indigenous skill that cannot be easily found. China introduces gun powder for medicinal use but Europe use it for cannons and firearms. This indicates that when technology is transferred from one country to another modifications were made for it to work considering: 1. Human and material resources are not equal 2. Results are not always desirable 3. Poorer countries need technologies that create human jobs and not to replace human jobs 4. Technologies were chosen by small groups in power rather than by those in need. The adoption decision always depend on the factors that affect investment decisions: 1. benefits 2. costs 3. risks and uncertainty 4. environment and institutions (market regulations Benefits depend on: 1. Closeness of substitute technologies 2. Networks and standards 3. Experience and learning 4. Adopter skills
