Room in the Inn Shoals Inc. is a community-based partnership
providing food & shelter to the homeless in the Shoals during the winter months.
We are currently made up of a partnership with 17 Shoals area congregations & organizations.
We also support the homeless year-round by providing food & supplies, and by providing local
referrals for housing and employment.
What is
Room in the Inn
Shoals?Room in the Inn Shoals is a shelter program organized and conducted by various congregations and
organizations in our community that provide our homeless population three things: shelter, sustenance and
respect during our coldest months. Our goal is to create small, independent shelters at our congregations
and organizations all over the Shoals. We believe that small shelters are safer and provide more personal
contact. Each shelter will have proper security, be sufficiently warm, and have adequate bathroom facilities.
We do not promise to solve all our guests’ problems, but what we do promise is a place to keep them
warm, fed and safe. During the winter months, our guests will receive a clean blanket, a cot or mattress to
sleep on, a place to wash up, an evening meal, something to eat in the morning, and friendly conversation.
Room in the Inn is a program founded upon one principle: THE PRINCIPLE OF RESPECT. We believe that
no one is better than anyone else, regardless of race, creed, sex, age, physical or mental impairment, or
any other individual differences. At Room in the Inn, we see our fellow neighbors as Guests; not clients,
patients, inmates, cases or anything other than fellow human beings on this journey of life. Room in the Inn
Shoals also supports our homeless population year-round by providing referrals to housing and employment
services, a mailing address, and food and clothing when requested. We collaborate with other agencies to
help provide some of these services. As we raise additional funds, our goal is to open a year-round intake
center in downtown Florence so that the homeless will have a place to stay out of the heat, get cooling relief
supplies, and have easy access to local services that help with employment, transportation, and housing. This
center will be staffed by the same volunteers that operate during the winter seasons.
