HIGH POINT, NC - The Greater High Point Food Alliance is hosting the 2nd annual
Food Summit on March 18 and 19. The event will be held at the HPU Community Center
at Oak Hollow Mall. Admission is free of charge and open to the public. The doors will

the community on the growing problem of food hardships in the area.
Carl Vierling, the founder of the Greater High Point Food Alliance states, "In order to
improve food security in the community it is important to hear different voices as plans
are established. Each person has unique talents and experiences that are an vital to this
community. The Food Summit is instrumental in structuring the strategic plan that will
result in success."
According to dosomething.org, “food deserts” are geographic areas where access to
affordable, healthy food options (aka fresh fruits and veggies) is limited or nonexistent
because grocery stores are too far away. The areas surrounding downtown High Point
would fall into this category. According to the Food and Research Action Center, in 2014
the Greensboro-High Point area ranks number one in the nation.
In 2015, around 400 people attended the Greater High Point Food Alliance Food Summit.
This was the largest attended food summit in the nation.
Busses will be provided at three area neighborhood stops free of charge:
Washington Street: March 18 at the Ritz
West End Neighborhood: March 18 at West End Ministries
Burns Hill: March 18 at Baldwin’s Chapel 7th Day Adventist Church
Pick up will be at 8:15 a.m and will return at 4 p.m from all three locations.
