To whom it may concern,
My name is Shawn Robinson, and I’m seeking a full time engineering position. I am 23 years old and recently finished my
first year of graduate school in Nuclear Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines (2015-2016). I graduated with a B.S.
in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in August of 2015.
In college, I focused on material science, heat transfer, and manufacturing processes. Through my research, I was able to
push my understanding of manufacturing processes, design, and inspection capabilities. My research primarily focused on
hyperspectral, thermal and digital imaging of aluminum casting and algorithm development to determine possible failure
points. This research includes a structural analysis of the aluminum samples using surface defect and fatigue life concepts
to predict defective regions. Using concepts of heat transfer and material science, I designed a heat transfer experiment
for the samples and did thermal analysis using FLIR tools and software. In another project, I single handedly designed and
built from scratch, a radio frequency capacitive coupled vacuum plasma chamber, capable of plasma etching; the same
process used in chip and wafer fabrication as a part of a year-long plasma technology course. Here I learned about the
basics of plasma generation, plasma circuitry, optical emission spectroscopy used for diagnostics, as well as applications
of plasma for sterilization, vapor deposition, etching, electroplating, and more. At the School of Mines, I designed and built
a neutron collimator for an existing plutonium beryllium neutron source at the Denver Federal Center. Here I used
concepts of physics, material science, SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor CAD programs to design the collimator, and
make a usable prototypes using 3D printing. These collimated thermal neutrons emitted from the neutron source were
used for neutron radiography experiments creating x-ray like images.
During my undergraduate career, I increased my skillset to that of a research/systems engineer. I have engaged in
undergrad research as a part of LSAMP since spring of 2012, and presented both oral and poster presentations at various
conferences and symposiums. As a result of these projects, as well as other’s that I shadowed or assisted peers with, I
have developed a strategic approach to projects that has left me with a tendency to want to work on interdisciplinary
projects. My presentation and tutoring experience sharpened my informative/public speaking skills, and allows me to
clearly convey detailed information in simple language which one from any background could understand.
On my own time, I tinker with backyard engineering and building projects, 3D printing design, and radio controlled
drones and RC planes. I use my design skills and my desktop 3D printer to create parts for the RC planes. I also excel with
sales, presentations, and other situations that involve more of the people skills not commonly associated with
engineering, needed for relaying information across departments or ordering parts from manufacturers.
I am seeking a full time engineering position, in test/systems engineering, design, project management or related
positions. My background in relevant technologies, people skills, project management and engineering design skills will
make me a strong willing candidate, both individually and as a part of a team, to tackle any project available. I thank you
again for consideration and look forward to the possibility of working with you soon.
Sincerely,
Shawn Robinson
