3. LEED
• LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design .It is an internationally recognized green building
certification system, providing third-party verification
that a building or community was designed and built using
strategies aimed at improving performance across all the
metrics that matter most: energy savings, water
efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor
environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and
sensitivity to their impacts. It was Developed by
USGBC(U.S Green Building Council).
4. Steps to certification
1. REGISTER
Register the project by submitting key information.
2.SUBMIT
Submit the completed, comprehensive certification application through LEED
Online and pay a certification review fee.
3.REVIEW
Then LEED application is reviewed by GBCI, a third-party organization.
4.CERTIFY
Certify the project and measure its performance.
7. LEED in Bangladesh
According to USGBC, Bangladesh has the highest number of green
factories in the world . At present, Bangladesh has a total of 108
LEED green factories including highest of 26 platinum-ranked
units. More than 500 garment factories in the country have
registered themselves for LEED accreditation. The number of green
factories has been increasing considerably in the country since
2014.Bangladesh have 7 industries among top 10 industries in the
world. This move towards green buildings helped in recovering
Bangladesh’s image after the Rana Plaza building collapse in April
2013 .

9. Importance of LEED certified factories
LEED certified factories demonstrate a commitment to their
people, providing them with a space that improves
productivity and contributes to their health and wellness. We
know that improved indoor environmental quality reduces sick
leave and absenteeism and can help lower stress levels. LEED-
certified buildings are: Built to be energy-efficient, ensuring
that the home can be comfortably heated and cooled with
minimal energy usage; Designed to minimize indoor and
outdoor water usage. Use an estimated 30 to 60% less energy
than a comparable home built to International Energy
Conservation Code.
10. Importance of LEED certified factories
Due to have many LEED certified factories, Bangladesh holds
an advantage over other countries in export sector. Those
factories automatically lower the manufacturing cost of goods
so that, manufacturer can earn more. Though buyers does not
pay extra for the LEED certification. But overall cost of goods
is reduced. Also it is fully eco-friendly and sustainable project
which is a great relief for us. Without damaging the eco system
of environment these LEED certified factories becomes blessing
for our growing economy.
11. Conclusion
LEED certified factories are most important for our
environment. To save the economy without destroying the
environment eco system LEED certification plays a huge role.
The owner of factories should take necessary steps to bring
their factory under LEED certification. By doing this we can
save our economy thus ensure a healthy environment for our
upcoming generations.
