A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai), 1993
Analysis of the Photographer
I like the work by Jeff Walls, as he uses a ‘large-scale back-lit cibachrome’ effect
in his photographs, which caught that specific moment and tells a story within
the image. For example one of his pieces ‘ A Sudden Gust of Wind (after
Hokusai), 1993’, as from the left handed side, you can see the individual’s papers
from his suitcase is blowing away in the wind, as others behind him are covering
themselves from the gust of wind and looking with what’s going on around them.
Furthermore, Jeff Walls has capture that moment with the camera at the certain
time, as this makes the photograph significant and illustrates a story to the
viewer, that they have to finish the story off in their version to the story. This is
one influence that I will considered when I specialize in photography as I will
take my images carefully as I want to caught that moment that illustrates a
multiple endings to the story in that photograph to the viewer, just like Jeff Walls
does in ‘A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai), 1993’.
Picture for Women (1979). Art critic Jed Perl describes Picture for Women as
Wall's signature piece. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Wall)
Another reason, why I am inspired by the work of Jeff Walls is from his
‘signature piece’ above, as this photograph isn’t like others ones of his or like
other photographer’s signature pieces. As when I first come across the
photograph, I only look at the photograph in one approaching view, in which
was someone else, who isn’t see in the photograph has took it of the woman,
the setting and Jeff Walls. Then I looked at the photograph more in depth and
detail, and seen another view to the photograph in which Jeff Walls has taken
the image as it was reflecting back on the mirror as seen by the metal frame
in the mid point of the photograph.
This is why I am a fan of Jeff Walls photography work, as he applies multiple
views that the viewer can approach his work in m a million of ways. As Jeff
Walls allows the viewer to finish off the story just like in ‘A Sudden Gust of
Wind’ or to see the photograph in a million ways like in ‘Picture for Women’.
As this motivates me to use a similar effect within my own photograph and
artwork as I want the viewer to finish off the story and apply their own
experience and thoughts/feelings to the piece in which makes the piece
personal to them as well as myself.
