• ACCORDING TO THE MINNESTO LITERACY
COUNCIL INTELLECTUAL IMPAIRMENT IS THE
SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED ABILITY TO
UNDERSTAND NEW OR COMPLEX INFORMATION,
LEARN NEW SKILLS AND TO COPE
INDEPENDANTLY INCLUDING SOCIAL
FUNCTIONING.
COMMON CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAY HAVE
SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS ON LEARNERS INDIVIDUAL
LEARNING
MINNESTO LITERACY COUNCIL
DIFFICULTY UNDERSTANDING NEW
INFORMATION.
SLOW COGNITIVE PROCESSING TIME
DIFFICULTY COMPREHENDING ABSTRACT
CONCEPTS.
THEY HAVE PROBLEMS USING LOGICAL
THINKING TO PLAN IDEAS AND SOLVE
PROBLEMS.
MULTI-SENSORY TECHNIQUE AS A
TEACHING STRATEGY
 THE DEPATRMENT OF EDUCATION AND SKILLS DEFINE THE
MULTI-SENSORY TEACHING STRATEGY AS “USING VISUAL,
AUDITORY AND KINESTHETIC MODALITIES, SOMETIIMES AT
THE SAME TIME. STUDENTS ENGAGE WITH THE CONTENT IN
MORE THAN ONE WAY.
 IT IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE VAKT WHICH IMPLIES THAT
LEARNERS LEARN BEST WHEN INFORMATION IS PRESENTED IN
DIFFERENT MODALITIES (Mercer, 1993).
HOW?
 VISUAL LEARNERS- LEARN BEST BY USING THEIR
EYES TO SEE INFORMATION.
 FOR EXAMPLE, THE TEACHER SHOULD USE
PRINTED WORDS, GRAPHICS, PICTURES AND
OBSERVING REAL LIFE MATTERS.
•AUDITORY LEARNERS- LEARN BEST BY
LISTENING TO SOMEONE PRESENTING
INFORMATION ORALLY.
FOR EXAMPLE, THE TEACHER COULD ALLOW
LEARNERS TO PRESENT SPEECHES IN THE
CLASSROOM TO DISCUSS WHAT THEY HAVE
LEARNT.
•TEACHER COULD ALSO DURING LESSONS
ALLOW A FEW MINUTES FOR LEARNERS TO
HAVE A DISCUSSION AMONGST EACH OTHER.
 TACTILE LEARNERS- THEY LEARN BEST THROUGH
THEIR SENSES OF TOUCH SUCH AS USING THEIR
HANDS AND FINGERS.
 FOR EXAMPLE, TEACHERS CAN USE WORD
BUILDING KITS WHEREBY LEARNERS MAKE OUT
WORDS USING THESE COLORFUL KNITS
 KINEASTHETIC LEARNERS- THESE LEARNERS
LEARN BEST THROUGH MOVEMENT OF THEIR
GROSS MOTER MUSCLES.
 THE THEORIST JEROME
BRUNER A STONG ADVOCATE
FOR CONSTRUCTIVE
LEARNING INVOLVES HANDS
ON ACTIVITIES.
• FOR EXAMPLE, THE TEACHER COULD
INTRODUCE COMPETITION GAMES DURING
TEACHING AND LEARNING. “30 SECONDS”
WHY IS THIS TEACHING STATEGY
GOOD TO USE
FOR LEARNERS
• RESEARCH REVEALS THAT STUDENTS WHO STUDY IN A
WAY THAT SUPPORTS THEIR LEARNING STYLE CAN
PERFORM BETTER ON TESTS AND IMPROVE THEIR
GRADES.
• LEARNERS COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT HAPPENS FASTER
• IT IS MORE LEARNER-CENTRED SO LEARNERS WILL BE
MORE INVOLVED IN THE LEARNING.
WHY IS IT A GOOD TEACHING
STRATEGY TO USE
FOR TEACHERS
 It helps them maintain an organized classroom
 It helps them break instructions down into
manageable tasks
 It also helps teachers be able to supply regular,
quality feedback to the learners.
