4. Ozone Layer
The term “Ozone Layer” refers to the ozone within
Stratosphere i.e. at 10-50 Kms. altitude from Earth’s
surface.
Ozone is an irritating, corrosive, colorless gas with a
smell something like burning electrical wiring.
In fact, ozone is easily produced by any high-voltage
electrical arc (Spark plugs, Tesla coils, arc welding
etc.).
5. Benefits of Ozone Layer
Ozone helps to protect life on Earth by absorbing ultraviolet
radiation from the sun.
It completely stops the penetration of UV-C rays and
eliminates most of the UV-B rays into Earth’s atmosphere.
8. Factors Depleting Ozone Layer
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) : From soaps, spray
aerosols, insulating foams, ‘take-away’ containers and
cooling utilities such as refrigerators and air
conditioners.
Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) : Pesticides,
Industrial solvents, and halons used in fire
extinguishers.
Other Chemicals : Other chemicals like Clx, Hox and
Nox.

10. Effects of Ozone Depletion
Causes Skin cancer and Cataracts in Humans.
UV rays can also lead to weakening of immune system.
Extensive exposure to UV rays can lead to acceleration
of the aging process of your skin.
11. Contd……..
UV Rays affects the growth of plants.
UV radiation alters both sources and sinks of green house
gases in the biosphere.
Acid rain is also produced due to ozone layer depletion.
12. How Can We Prevent Ozone
Depletion
Don’t buy any products with CFCs.
Check your fire extinguishers for “Hydrocarbons”.
Dispose of old air conditioning units, refrigerators
that use CFCs to function.
13. Contd….
Limit use of private vehicles.
Use eco-friendly household cleaning products.
Limit use of Pesticides.

Earth Overshoot
Day (EOD) is the
calculated illustrative
calendar date on which
humanity's resource
consumption for the year
exceeds Earth's capacity
to regenerate those
resources that year.
