1. Briefaccount of professional experienceS.R.RamaswamyPh.D., P.E. ConsultingEngineer:
A. During 2014 & 2015 I developedaprocessdesignandproposalsforprovidinghotair blastfor an iron
smeltingblastfurnace (3000 T/daypig iron).Thisprocesscouldbe a replacementforthe hotblast
stovescurrentlyused.The processconsistedof usingcirculatingsandinauniquelynovel equipment
savingconsiderablyoninvestmentandoperatingcosts.Thisdesignalsoeliminatesthe cyclicoperation
of the stovesandthe accompanyingvalvingtoaccomplishthe cyclicoperation. Thisairheateris a
particulate solidscontactor withgases and can be used for accomplishingadsorption, catalytic
reactions,drying etc.
In contrast to the fluidbedequipmentthe describedequipmentdoesnotneedany gas distribution
plate, and inmulti staged fluidbedoperations(Ex. Fluo- Solids) doesnot needany level control dams,
down comers etc.The gas flowpressure drop compared to a fluidbedwill be very low.The
equipment’ssimple constructionmakespossible a counter current multiple stage (50) operation,very
much like a distillationcolumnbut withoutthe plates. Also the particle gas contacting isthorough as
opposedto the bubble phenomenaofthe fluidizedbedwhichdrasticallyreducesits contacting
efficiency.
B. I workedfora consultingfirmasan engineerdesigningsteel supportingstructuresforprocess
equipment.Idevelopedaprocessesforabating industrial waterpollution.The entire towns’and
villages’subsurface waterbecame unusable becauseof the dyesandsaltdischargedbythe textile dyers.
The pollutionwork resultedina processfor removing textile dyesandsalts from the waste water. A
challenge inthis work involvedin removingsalt by multiple effectevaporation. The low value of the
recoveredsalt coupledwith its corrosivenessmake use of standard equipmentprohibitive. A
demonstrationplant was built and an Indianpatent was grantedfor thisprocess. (10 years)
C. Workedas an engineerforafoodingredientsmanufacturer.Here Idevelopedprocessformaking
coloringmaterialsandnon-nutritivedietaryfiberfromoathulls.Awardedseveral US patents which
have beenimplementedto shipproducts to several beverage foodand weightlosscompanies. (7
years)
D. My careertook me to a major beverage andfood company. workedasa companyengineeranda
contract consultant. Here Iwas responsible fordesign, implementationandoperationof plantsto
produce critical ingredients.Ihave installedplantsinmanycountries. Workedonprocessestoremove
FDA identifiedtoxins.Thiswork involveddevelopmentofamembrane separationprocess to remove
the toxinswithout alteringother characteristics like viscosityetc., ofthe material beingused.A patent
coveringthis work is pendingwith US patent office. (9years)
E. I workedformajor petrochemical companyforaboutthree andhalf years.Primarilyworkedon
distillationequipmentdesign forhydrocarbonseparations.(3years)
