Short Story
Hard work..The Best Gift Of My Mother
Looking back I never thought at the time that we were poor. I always thought about trying to
help those in the village that were poorer that we were. It was a sugar cane settlement
housing workers that worked in the sugarcane fields. My mother, a cane cutter, had all
thirteen of us well disciplined and by her care and dedication sent all of us to school. We the
boys...all seven of us. Six are girls, will go to the cane fields to assist her to cut and bundle
canes during our growing up ages until we could fend for ourselves. It was hard work under
the sweltering sun and at times we will go early in the morning long before sunrise to assist
leaving the fields at dusk sometimes. Maya, my mother, will be paid for only the three tons
per day even if we cut and loaded four tons or more. There were times she was allowed
another chain so it could be 2x 3tons and we she would happy to get the extra for our sake.
During the planting season we will assist so we all learned to grow and harvest canes for the
estate and we even had our own 5 acre plot to do the backbreaking work. Soon enough I was
employed as an apprentice welder and followed the dedication of my mother's commitment
to hard work and eventually ended up as a Chief Engineer at the sugar factory and focused on
doing my best at all times.
My mother persevered through it all and the lessons learned from her through the
experience of helping her in the fields gave me the opportunity to travel the world in the
sugar industry as I was able to do good work that others required. Those years in the field
were not child labor but the best learning opportunity I ever had in spite of the adversity and
hard work. Thanks Maya ...I love you more for it.

Every Sunday morning I take a light jog around a park near my home. There’s a lake located in one
corner of the park. Each time I jog by this lake, I see the same elderly woman sitting at the water’s edge
with a small metal cage sittingbeside her.
This past Sunday my curiosity got the best of me, so I stopped jogging and walked over to her. As I got
closer, I realized that the metal cage was in fact a small trap. There were three turtles, unharmed,
slowly walking around the base of the trap. She had a fourth turtle in her lap that she was carefully
scrubbing with a spongybrush.
“Hello,” I said. “I see you here every Sunday morning. If you don’t mind my nosiness, I’d love to know
what you’re doing with theseturtles.”
She smiled. “I’m cleaning off their shells,” she replied. “Anything on a turtle’s shell, like algae or scum,
reduces the turtle’s ability to absorb heat and impedes its ability to swim. It can also corrode and
weaken the shell overtime.”
“Wow! That’s really nice of you!” Iexclaimed.
She went on: “I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these
little guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference.”
“But don’t mostfreshwater turtles live their whole lives with algae and scum hanging from their shells?”
Iasked.
“Yep, sadly, they do,” shereplied.
I scratched my head. “Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent? I mean, I think your
efforts are kind and all, but there are fresh water turtles living in lakes all around the world. And 99% of
these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells. So, no offense… but
how exactly are your localized efforts here truly makinga difference?”
The woman giggled aloud. She then looked down at the turtle in her lap, scrubbed off the last piece of
algae from its shell, and said, “Sweetie, if this little guy could talk, he’d tell you I just made all the
difference in theworld.”
The moral: You can change the world – maybe not all at once, but one person, one animal, and one
good deed at a time. Wake up every morning and pretend like what you do makes a difference. It does.
24. • Purpose - Team Bonding
• Activity – employees to draw a caricature of their coworker, a lot of us are

A Simple Technology That Can Solve India’s Clean #Water Problem In Just
Rs.3,000
Water borne diseases are the number one cause of deaths worldwide,
with WHO and CDC estimates pinning 3.5 million deaths every year
to contaminated drinking water. In India alone, around 2,000 people die
every day due to lack of clean drinking water, and out of these, children
under the age of five are most vulnerable.
n dry regions like Rajasthan, we see a trail of women walking several
kilometers just to get a bucket of water.
A Canadian scientist, Dr.David Manz, invented and designed an amazing
tool that could solve this problem. He developed a low cost Bio-sand
Water Filter that effectively removes all the dissolved particles and
pathogens from the water. This slow purifying process manages to
remove up to 98% of bacteria, 100% of viruses, 99% of parasites,
protozoa, amoebae, and worms, 95% of heavy metals, and with a slight
modification, 93% of arsenic. It manages to eliminate illnesses such as
Typhoid, Cholera, Hepatitus A, Rotavirus, E-coli bacteria, and other
dysentery causing organisms.

Not App-y With YourAnswer
Me: “Thank you for calling the [Company] support. My name is
[My Name]. How can I assist you?”
Customer: “My app isn’t working right.”
Me: “How is it not working right?”
Customer: “It’s not transmitting data to my watch.”
Me: “All right, there’s some troubleshooting steps we can do.”
(I lead the customer through the steps, but it still isn’t
connecting properly.)
Me: “Atthis point, the app is launching properly. Contacting the
developer of the app is the next step.”
Customer: “You mean, like, on their web page?”
Me: “Yes. If the app is installed and launching like it should, but
still not working, that would be the next step.”
Customer: “I already did that.”
Me: “You contacted them?”
Customer: “Yeah, it’s a known problem. I just wanted you to
have a different answer.”

Clean YourCup
I recently started a new job, in a small office, where four of us share a water
purifier . One of my coworkers complained the water tasted "dirty". It went
on for a few days, and she was stunned I could drink the water without any
trouble. I started to doubt my taste buds, but the water really tasted fine.
Finally, she figured out the problem was actually her cup. She simply forgot
to clean it, and after awhile started to affect the water inside it. She cleaned
her cup, and drank the water with no problem.
I can't help but look at this, and think about the world we live in. Too often
we quickly blame other people, other things, anything else but ourselves.
"You're racist". "You're intolerant". "You're the problem". The world isn't
perfect, I know, but I think we should take a step back sometimes and ask
ourselves some tough questions.
Can I be better? Is my heart really pure? Can I help this situation with
kindness?
I want to tell you this; please clean your cup. Because when you do, the
water will taste much better. I promise you this.

“The only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is
great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what
you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking, and don't
settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you
find it. And like any great relationship, it just gets better and
better as the years roll on. So keep looking, don't settle.”
