Learning goals should be challenging and should include building on your strengths, as
well as overcoming limitations as you develop these goals. (The Interprofessional Health Care
Team, pg. 133). In five years, my personal leadership goal is to be a manager in one of the
Health Administration Services departments in The Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical
Center. As being a manager in five years, I am hoping to be moving forward into becoming the
chief of the Health Administration Services. I see myself as a very hardworking, passionate,
committing, proactive worker who will be once ready to take on the role of managing a
department. I will use my motivated vision to lead me to complete my goal. Being a manager for
a department in Health Administration Services will be important to me because knowing where
I am today at the age of 23 with a government job, secure job; I feel that I can only progress from
here. My work ethics and qualities are great for being a leader. I was told multiple times by
employees that only knew me for months as well as management that I would be a great fit for a
management position and I one day will achieve that. With that being said to me, I have to
achieve this goal to not only show myself but others as well that I am capable of this and I can
succeed at this job.
To achieve my goal as being a manager in five years, I first want to finish school and
achieve my bachelor’s degree in Health Care Science. Many people that work for the
government do not have degrees or college education so with me being one step ahead I feel that
my degree will make me better qualified than others. Education is a key and with learning about
leadership, tactics to deal with employees and promoting leadership is what makes me more
qualified than someone who has not been taught or learned these situations. Other resources I
may need are experience with leading others in the workplace. As well as gaining knowledge
from higher leadership staffing and information they share to help others that want to progress

like myself. Also by learning as much information as needed is a great resource. Being a leader
and a manager, it is very important to know the job that is being done to be able to guide when
the help is needed. It is very frustrating when working with a supervisor that does not know the
job and can help limitlessly. I think education and knowledge will reach me to my goal
tremendously.
I definitely think I can take action on my goal. I have the ability and resources that I need.
Being that I am already working at the VA medical center and working in the department of
Health Administrative Services, I get see the ins and outs of the department. I also get to see the
rights and wrongs in my opinion of management as well as learning the job. Being hands on at
the moment makes me feel that I am taking great advantage of achieving my goal. I can now take
my time to strategize things that I see working for the employees as well as patients. I see what
communication works with both employees and patients, I see what tactics may and may not
work with changing the ways work is done, I hear the feedback by employees of what they like a
dislike which can be very beneficial to know. I am getting a head start on what I will be dealing
with as well as a chance to prepare for what is to come in the future. I am very willing to achieve
my goal to be a manager in the HAS department. Being that I am working a full time job with
forty hours a week and going to school part time two days a week, shows that I am motivated to
make my dream come true and accomplish my goal. As I stated before, I am in school working
on obtaining my bachelor’s degree to move up in the chain of command. My resources are great
to accomplish this goal so there is no way possible that I cannot make this happen in five years.
This gives me time to put my foot in the door, meet important people, make my mark on the
world as well as my workplace, and show them I am made for a management position in the
future. I believe that is a fair enough time to show someone who you really are and are able to

show them your true traits and qualities about oneself. I will be done my probation in one year,
then in three to four years I will gain my knowledge and will eventually become the manager of
a department of the Health Administration Services.
I believe that learning goals are very important because you have to learn to succeed as
well as going through phases and challenges so there could be a better outcome in future
references. A learning goal for me is to learn the entire eligibility enrollment process of the VA
Medical Center. Knowing this information makes it capable and easy to work anywhere
involving administration. My strength in learning fast is very strong. I am a hands on person and
enjoys to learn new information. Another learning goal is to learn how to deal with difficult
working employees. There are always going to be people that do not work diligently, so ways of
dealing with them in a nonnegative way and an effective way would be a great learning goal.
Another goal would be to train new employees on the correct information and processes with
great understanding that follows. I believe I have a leadership characteristic but learning how to
teach someone else could require different tactics. I believe that these goals could be
accomplished by the time I take the manager position. If I push myself, I have faith that I would
make a great supervisor and could make a change in the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical
Center.
