There is a challenge in taking a material that
has many negative connotations such as plastic
and elevating it not only to the primary element
of a luxury object but also to a desirable one.
The collection will challenge both figuratively
and literally the idea of consumerism and mass
production by being ‘handcrafted’ and on-demand
at the same time. The concept of the collection
will satirize our current social climate, through
the speculation of a future where the value of a
luxurious object is not based on precious materials
and gemstones, but rather on clean air and water
(the rarest and most exclusive resources). Fashion
is a field that lends itself to speculation because
time and time again, clothing has been present as
a cornerstone of society.

During my research, I found GreenGate3D a company that made100%
recycled PETG filament for an FDM style 3D printer. Their filament is made
from scrap plastics. The production of their filament is entirely based in
the USA. Upon further research, I also found a site called Precious Plastic,
where there were many tutorials on how to recycle plastics, the machines
needed to do so, and even how to make these machines. Through the
material library in my school, I also found recycled HDPE sheets from a
company called Yemmhart and I thought about implementing them onto my
design.
Later on, I found desktop filament
makers, two of the most intriguing ones
where 3DEVOS’s Composer 350 and
ReDeTec’s Protocycler+. The former was
not marketed as a recycling machine
while the latter did. These machines were
certainly an option to create a product
whose life cycle is closed, nevertheless,
other machines would be needed such
as a reliable plastic shredder like the
one that Precious Plastic sells as well as
provide instructions on how to make one.

Finally, I came up with a flow chart that
I believe could close the gap in making
a closed-loop life cycle product for the
collection. Since the costs of making
any of the products of the collection
are far below the average costs of a
standard fashion accessory, it allows
me to offer extensive guarantees on
the products since replacing whole
parts is rather inexpensive.
Furthermore, it also allows me to
offer discounts and other incentives
that encourage consumers to return
a product that A) is broken or B) they
no longer want. The returned product
-in theory- could be recycled following
Precious Plastic’s extensive guides and
made into material, such as filaments
and sheets that could be used to make
more products.
Nevertheless, product cards should
be elaborated to communicate the
responsibility needed when possessing
one of these products. These cards
should also implore consumers not
only to take good care of their product
but also to educate them on how to
dispose of it in a way that allows it to
be recycled instead of ending up in a
landfill.

WHY A TEST TUBE?
The choice of using a test tube is not
arbitrary. I chose to use a test tube as the
container of water Firstly because it only
allows a minuscule amount of water
to be kept in it, hence the title of the
collection: 6ML. This helps to portray the
scarcity of water in the depicted future.
Thirdly, the test tube, its shape, and
concept do a great job at echoing subtle
features of the retro-future, like the work of
Pierre Cardin, who was a major inspiration
in the conception of the collection and can
be seen in my concept board.
Lastly, the biggest inspiration for the collection was
Duchamp’s “50 cc of Paris Air”. The piece itself was
made with an already existing glass ampoule that was
broken and resealed. I wanted to stay true to Duchamp’s
process in that piece, so that became another reason
why I am using a pre-existing container: the test tube.
Secondly, it has
similar sensitivities
to Koons’ famous
vacuums in the
sense that similar
to his vacuums the
water inside the test
tube is never to be
open again, never
to be used. Just as
Koons’ vacuums
are self-proclaimed
virgins so is the water
in the test tube. It
can be argued that
this adds a further
layer of subconscious
desirability to the
object.

Before deciding on the test tube I made different
iterations of the clutch, where the container of water
was not just decorative but a functional part of the
clutch, as can be seen in the handles of these two
iterations. The water container in the 3rd iteration
was supposed to be removable, so that the user
could remove the container and exhibit it on a stand
in their home.
Here I was looking at different
ways to mount the test tube onto
the clutch. I wanted the user to
be able to take the test tube out
if wanted. I found the best way to
mount the test tube was to model
a holder for the test tube onto
the front face of the clutch. It was
decided that the clutch would
only have one test tube because
this reinforced the rhetoric that
water is scarce and a luxury, thus
having multiple test tubes would
only work against the concept of
the collection.

Looking at different ways the test tube could
be exhibited rather than just in the middle
of the clutch bag. I decided to proceed with
the test tube in the middle of the front face
of the clutch, because that way -in a sense-
it becomes the focus point, the center of
attention.

I began to place various things
into the clutch, with different
configurations for whether the
user would want to wear the
bag on a night out or every-day
or a sunny day. I was pleasantly
surprised by how many items the
bag fit. Furthermore it was also a
nice suprise the different effects
and distortions that the water in
the test tube had on the items
inside the bag.
