Sean Fowler completed a successful internship as a Mechanical Engineer Intern at Advanced Energy Instruments. Over the course of the internship, Sean gained experience working independently to debug complex problems involving both electrical and mechanical components. He learned to function well within a multi-disciplinary team, leveraging each member's strengths. Sean also developed a strong understanding of electrosurgical concepts and how to apply them to new instrument design. His manager noted that Sean exhibited a strong work ethic, technical skills, and mechanical intuition. Areas for further growth included networking more broadly within the company to understand challenges from different perspectives. Overall, Sean was well prepared and committed to doing quality work.
1. lntern Pgrformance Evaluation
To be completed by manager/mentor and discussed with the intern during the final 1:1.
Please schedule this meeting to take place the last week of the internship.

1. How did this intern grow/develop over the course of the internship? What key skills
did this intern learn?
Sean was able to take tasks on independently and complete complex debug and
analysis in a problem which contained electrical as well as mechanical components.
He learned how to function within a multi-disciplinary team and how to lean on each
of the team members' strengths. Sean also achieved a firm grasp of electrosurgical
concepts and is now able to add to the design of new electrosurgical instruments.
2. What behavior does this intern exhibit that is consistent with our culture?
lnconsistent with our culture? @leose refer to tSt Equotion for Employee Success)
Sean is a doer. He wants to solve the problem at hand and move onto the next one
while documenting what was done. He understands why we are doing what we do
and how much impact we can have. He is not afraid to try things and see what will
happen, but also takes direction from more senior engineers very well. He wants to
find out why things are and tries to work at the heart of the problem.
3. What are this intern's key strengths?
Sean has a strong technical ability coupled with a good mechanical intuition. He can
put his nose down for a long time and isn't afraid of a big problem.
4. What are the areas of opportunity for this intern to develop specific to this internship?
Areas to develop specific to their major or future career plans?
2. Sean should continue to network with people in different groups to understand the
problems we are tackling from a more global level. Specifically, Sean should look into
what other senior engineers are working on in our group as well as other groups
within the company.
5. How well was the intern prepared for the internship?
Sean came very prepared both technically and ready to work for whatever hours were
needed.
5. What additional advice or tips can you provide to this intern (ie; academic courses,
career progression, ind ustry).
Personally, I am a fan of technical graduate school. I feel that it taught me to not shy
away from more math in our analytics at work. lt is a very humbling experience and
shows what academic research looks like a compared to corporate research. lt also
gives an appreciation for the pace at which lSl moves and accomplishes major tasks.
