Educational Objectives
The Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute offers comprehensive training and
education on diabetes and chronic care management for professionals with
varying levels of expertise. Our programs use a stepped approach—1-3
day programs are comprised of all topics of interest to healthcare providers
and managers. Case studies, skill-building through demonstration and
practice, and small group discussions are used to meet educational objec-tives.
Participants can select segments of the training that are specific to their
level of expertise and needs for professional growth and development.
Topics include:
• Pathophysiology, clinical practice recommendations, pharmacologic
treatments
• Medical nutrition therapy and advanced carbohydrate counting
• Behavior change, goal-setting, motivational interviewing
• Insulin and incretin treatment; basal/bolus insulin dosing
• Using technology: insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring,
insulin pens
• Causes, risk factors, and treatment of hypo- and hyperglycemia
• Care for patients with diabetes in institutional settings – hospital and
long-term care
• Clinical management, including physical and educational assessments,
foot examination and depression screening
• Cultural and linguistic barriers, and culturally appropriate approaches
to patient care
• Chronic care management, including hypertension, hyperlipidemia,
and diabetes
• Team approaches to chronic care, including peer educators to support
patient self-management
