Dear Tim Visser,
Good morning from Hudsonville, Michigan where the snow is melting and
the temperatures are moving into the mid-thirties.
Scott Hofman informed me that he dropped off an application for a math
position at Shoreline Christian School several days ago. Allow me to
share some of my thoughts about Scott as a teacher.
Scott came to Unity (MI) Christian High School as a student teacher
working with Mark TeSlaa, an outstanding professional Christian school
teacher.
In the spring of the year we had interviewed Scott prior to allowing him to
do his student teaching at Unity. He impressed us with an engaging
enthusiasm which included his expressions of love for the Lord, for
teaching, for high school students, and for math. And in the fall our
impressions of Scott proved to be true - his enthusiasm allowed him to
engage all the students in learning, being a role model, and being a
mentor. He was a very fine teacher.
In the staff room Scott mixed well with all staff members and befriended
most of them. It wasn't long and he was considered a regular in the staff
room and at all the tables - he mixed well with all the teachers of all ages.
In the classroom Scott's enthusiasm for the students and for their learning
math helped him engage all the students in learning math without taking
corrective actions more than a look or a comment such as "Let's get back
to work and get'er done before class is over."
Scott very quickly caught on to and carried out our teacher standard of "A
teacher hasn't taught until the student has learned." He came early and
stayed late to help students. He re-worked lesson plans according to the
learning needs of the students.
When he finished his student teaching at Unity, I encouraged him to let me
know when he was applying for a position because I wanted to be able to
provide a recommendation for him...he was/is/and will be that good!
Scott not only distinquished himself as a teacher, he demonstrated a
2. passion to minister to his students. He attended extra-curricular activities
on a regular basis which included a night sitting in the rain watching the
Unity Crusaders' football lose a heartbreaker in the playoffs- he wanted to
experience the Unity evening with students, players, staff and parents.
In summary, Scott distinquished himself as an outstanding teacher at
Unity. I highly recommend him!
God bless you in your search.
Sincerely, Jack Postma
