7. Named Trench Pen, by William Power
Trench, an Irish Immigrant of the 18th
century.
Trench Pen became a squatter
settlement during the 1930s.
From 1940 -49 the Colonial Government
under Central Housing Authority (CHA)
developed Trench Town as model
township project.
Amenities included : housing, rental,
social housing, schools, a theatre (The
Ambassador), a park (Vin Lawrence
Park), YMCA and YWCA, health clinic
and fire station.

9. A lot of the houses which were created, whilst
establishing one of Jamaica’s first model
communal community( before its
garrisonization) were homes to merchants and
Business owners who operated the businesses
and directed commerce which happened in
down town Kingston’s shops and port.

contained area of residence which had its
own schools, churches, police and fire
station, clinic and theatre among other
enviable amenities. The up-town of the then
contemporary Kingston a first of its kind in a
line of model communities.

13. Trench town was no mistake as it was
designed to house Jamaica’s elite before the
mid 1900, strategically situated on the fringe
of Kingston’s down town business district.

16. By the 1970’s these residences were known
as the ‘Government Yards’ of Trench Town.
In the early 1970s the fragmentation of
Trench Town began by the two political
parties.
18. Trench Town is home to the communities of
Wilton Gardens [Rema], Federal Gardens,
Arnette Gardens [Jungle], Havana and
Buckers. These communities have been
systematically split along political lines
establishing garrisons which guarantees a
party a particular amount of votes as well as a
seat in parliament

to its numerous contributions to music and
sports. Numerous Ska, Rocksteady, and
Reggae musicians.
Most notably though was Bob Marley, who
spent much of his youth in a "government
yard" on first street, known to us as ‘Culture
Yard’, where he penned some of his earlier
hits.

Music which has fed an industry that is now
globally worth billions. The purpose for
developing a tour concept such as this is to
contextualize the phenomenon this story
embodies. It will highlight some of Jamaica’s
cultural legends who have contributed
significantly to the shaping of Jamaica’s most
renowned genres of music, framing what is
now celebrated as authentic Jamaican culture

opportunity to become ambassadors of a rich
heritage . No longer will their community and its
members suffer from the stereotypes of its
political scars. It will offer employment and
educational opportunities which will reduce the
realities of poverty as well as redirect the
energies of the unattached youth capitalizing on
his/her creative energies. It will bring to fore a
flurry of entrepreneurial opportunities especially
in the culinary, performing, craft other elements
of the cultural landscape.

brand new venture/ arm of tours in Jamaica.
“Urban/Ghetto/ Inner-city” Tourism has never
been thoroughly explored and unearthed as
the plans for the Touring of Trench Town will
have it. leading the charter will be the Island
Route Tour Company which, in endorsing this
project, will become pioneers; revolutionaries
to a tour industry now ripe for innovative
touring possibilities
