• WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT IS THE PROCESS IN WHICH WOMEN ELABORATE AND RECREATE WHAT IT IS
THAT THEY CAN BE, DO, AND ACCOMPLISH IN A CIRCUMSTANCE THAT THEY PREVIOUSLY WERE DENIED.
• EMPOWERMENT CAN BE DEFINED IN MANY WAYS, HOWEVER, WHEN TALKING ABOUT WOMEN'S
EMPOWERMENT, EMPOWERMENT MEANS ACCEPTING AND ALLOWING PEOPLE (WOMEN) WHO ARE ON THE
OUTSIDE OF THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS INTO IT.

• AS PER THE CENSUS 2001, THE INDIAN WORKFORCE IS OVER
400 MILLION, WHICH CONSTITUTES 39.1 % OF THE TOTAL
POPULATION OF THE COUNTRY.
• OF THE TOTAL 402 MILLION WORKERS, 275 MILLION ARE
MALES AND 127 MILLION FEMALES.
• THIS WOULD MEAN THAT 51.7 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL MALES
AND 25.6 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL FEMALES ARE WORKERS.
• THE NUMBER OF FEMALE WORKERS IS ABOUT LESS THAN
HALF THE NUMBER OF MALE WORKERS.
• IN TERMS OF PROPORTION, 68.4 PERCENT OF THE WORKERS
ARE MALES AND 31.6 PERCENT FEMALES.

AZAD FOUNDATION
• STARTED IN 2008 AS A CHARITABLE TRUST IN DELHI. THE BASIS OF THEIR ORGANISATION EMERGED FROM THE PERSISTENT
GENDER INEQUALITIES IN INDIA AND THE SHEER NEED OF FINDING NON-TRADITIONAL, HIGH-RETURN LIVELIHOOD OPTIONS
FOR POOR WOMEN IN URBAN AREAS.
• THEY STARTED WORK WITH FUNDS RAISED LARGELY FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS AS MOST YOUNG ORGANISATIONS DO.
• SINCE THEIR INCEPTION IN SOUTH DELHI, THEY HAVE GROWN TO OTHER LOCATIONS – WITH FOUR TRAINING CENTRES IN
DELHI, AN OFFICE IN JAIPUR AND ONE IN KOLKATA.
• THEY ALSO OFFER RESIDENTIAL TRAINING TO WOMEN FROM AREAS WHERE THEY DO NOT WORK THROUGH WOMEN ON
WHEELS ACADEMY, AND HAVE BROUGHT WOMEN ON WHEELS INTO INDORE, AHMEDABAD, AND BANGALORE WORKING IN
PARTNERSHIP WITH LIKE-MINDED PARTNERS.
• AZAD FOUNDATION PROVIDES LIVELIHOODS WITH DIGNITY FOR RESOURCE-POOR WOMEN LIVING IN URBAN AREAS IN
INDIA.

• WOMEN ON WHEELS IS A UNIQUE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
THAT AIM TO PROVIDE NON-TRADITIONAL LIVELIHOOD
WITH DIGNITY TO RESOURCE POOR WOMEN AS WELL
AS OFFER SAFE AND ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORT
OPTIONS TO WOMEN IN SOME CITIES IN INDIA.
• WOMEN ON WHEEL IS DELIVERED THROUGH A HYBRID
INSTITUTION STRUCTURE: AZAD FOUNDATION, A NON-
PROFIT ORGANIZATION PROVIDING EMPOWERMENT
TRAINING & SUPPORT; AND SAKHA CONSULTING
WINGS, A PROFIT ORGANIZATION PROVIDING CAB
SERVICES TO WOMEN.

• WOMEN EMPLOYED CHAUFFEURS EARN ANYTHING
BETWEEN 7,500 – 20,000 INR.
• AS PER A RECENT STUDY BY AZAD FOUNDATION,
THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO POSTPONE MARRIAGE,
CHOOSE PARTNERS OF THEIR OWN PREFERENCE,
AND WALKOUT OF ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP.
• MANY OF THE WOMEN TRAINED BY AZAD HAVE
BECOME ROLE MODELS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES
AND HAVE BEEN FEATURED IN IN DIFFERENT MEDIA

THE BASIS OF THEIR ORGANISATION EMERGED FROM THE PERSISTENT GENDER INEQUALITIES IN INDIA AND THE SHEER NEED OF FINDING NON-TRADITIONAL, HIGH-RETURN LIVELIHOOD OPTIONS FOR POOR WOMEN IN URBAN AREAS. • THEY STARTED WORK WITH FUNDS RAISED LARGELY FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS AS MOST YOUNG ORGANISATIONS DO. • SINCE THEIR INCEPTION IN SOUTH DELHI, THEY HAVE GROWN TO OTHER LOCATIONS – WITH FOUR TRAINING CENTRES IN DELHI, AN OFFICE IN JAIPUR AND ONE IN KOLKATA. • THEY ALSO OFFER RESIDENTIAL TRAINING TO WOMEN FROM AREAS WHERE THEY DO NOT WORK THROUGH WOMEN ON WHEELS ACADEMY, AND HAVE BROUGHT WOMEN ON WHEELS INTO INDORE, AHMEDABAD, AND BANGALORE WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LIKE-MINDED PARTNERS. • AZAD FOUNDATION PROVIDES LIVELIHOODS WITH DIGNITY FOR RESOURCE-POOR WOMEN LIVING IN URBAN AREAS IN INDIA.
