1. Utilising Spatial Technologies to Support the
Catchment Based Approach to Landscape Management
PhD research at the UEA studied three case studies within the CaBA themes of engage, use data, deliver and monitor. To engage stakeholders the first
case study used emerging augmented reality technology on smartphones to communicate the location of and information about features in the
landscape which provide us with ecosystem services. This could be adapted to show information about any landscape feature in a catchment and be
updated from a central location to reflect changes in a landscape or river network.
Taking the dual themes of using existing data and delivering solutions the second case study adapted visioning software to see if this could facilitate
stakeholder participation in the creation of a future sustainable catchment plan. Bringing together a wider range of stakeholders than had previously
been done and demonstrating the adaptation required to build a more sustainable catchment led to insights not previously considered and greater
support from the community. This project could be applied from a one off project to a long term data management solution allowing stakeholders to
contribute and review data from the hub where it is stored.
With the aim of engaging stakeholder in monitoring their water environment the third and final case study enabled a catchment volunteer group to
collect data using a citizen science app on mobile phones to capture information about the health of their river catchment and then from a higher level
research perspective investigated the interaction between the human and technological agents. The insights into best practice with this form of data
collection are transferable to any citizen science project of varying scales.
