in the area, but their prices

6. Fishing in Lake of the
Woods
Extreme fishing limits, that were
set by Ontario and ignored by the
United States hurt tourism in the
area, and personal livelihoods of
residents in the 1990s.
In order to get national attention,
some residents asked their
congressman to threaten to
secede.
The stunt worked, and an
agreeable deal on fishing limits
was put in place.
7. The Red Lake Band owns 70% of the
Northwest Angle’s land. (shown in pink)
In the late 1990’s when Congressman Collin
Peterson gave the residents of Angle Inlet
Township the option of seceding from the
United States, it upset many members of the
tribe. Not because they did or didn’t want to
secede, but because nobody talked to them
about what they wanted.
