Their amazing instincts puzzle and confound
Of their cues & skills we have some idea by now
but we haven’t been able to decode
some of the secrets they still hold ;
It is true we have been told
they can return unfailingly home
right on the dot safe and sound
from unknown horizons and beyond
by routes and ways never visited or known
Of course many theories have been propounded
Sun compass and an internal clock to which it is tuned
and a magnetic compass to sense geomagnetic field , abound
An olfactorymap and /or a magnetic map
to enable them to smell the air and get guidance from
the magnetic lines of force hypothesis are sound
But still when cut off from all the clues
weather ,photoperiod , polarized light or all these
they can still find the right direction and way

and reach home as if they new the way
Oh ! How ? - they don’t tell us any way .

Oh! what a great bird is this tiny tot of arctic America
Of just an ounce or so but of great stamina
surprising everybody by performing a great feat
crossing the whole continent of Asia end to end indeed
its Alaskan family flocks flying night after night
reaching for wintering the sub saharan east Africa
covering a distance of 9000 miles via Siberia and Arabia
And its families of Greenland, Iceland and Eastern Canada

crossing the Atlantic proceeding via west Europe to west Africa
both performing such an arduous task both ways timely every year
taking guidance from celestial cues like polarized light &the stars
and sensing earths magnetic field - oh how !
Their preparation for the long journey is equally fascinating
as both intrinsic and extrinsic factors start playing
their role, with changes in photoperiod etc ensuring
that they start feeling restless and accumulating
fat, for the energy requirement of their respective journey
via Asian or Europian route timely .
The point which makes my eyes widen with wonder
Is that this little birdie knows all about winds and thunder
While near one pole knows well about other poles weather
Where are best breeding or feeding grounds in this or that hemisphere
Selects a route most suitable for it ,even if it be longer
Chooses stopovers for rest and refueling with care
Adjusts altitude speed and timing taking care of factors which matter.
Oceans like Atlantic and deserts like Sahara do not seem to matter!

Their knowledge of the geography of the world is quite amazing
That they can ‘read ’lines of force and use them precisely ,astounding
But even more their ideas about celestial bodies & their motion in sky
so exact and so perfect that they can take their bearing precisely
Oh !how they can know the stars and the constellations so nicely
The thought makes me wonder more and more as I think daily .
