6. CDRI research is supported by a very modern, highly rich in collection and well
managed Library. The books and journals available in the library are perfectly in
tune with the requirement of current Biomedical Research. The collection in
terms of books and journals among the best in their respective fields are updated
regularly. The materials on newly emerging fields are added on a very regular
basis.
The inception of CDRI Library dates back to 1951. With a small collection of
about two thousand Publications to start with, this Library was primarily set up
to meet the information needs of the Scientific & Technical Staff of the Institute.
With the passage of time the library grew at a higher pace. And, in order to cater
to the ever increasing scientific and technological information needs of the
professionals, it systematically and gradually built up a specialized collection of
reading materials such as specialized books, periodicals, reference works, serials
and various macro & micro-documents in the areas of Biomedical Research and
Drugs & Pharmaceuticals. The wealth of this highly specialized library began to
draw the attention of the academic and R&D workers of other institutions in the
city like Lucknow University, King Gorge's Medical College, Sanjay Gandhi Post
Graduate Institute etc. and outside the city from the drug industry and research
organizations.
HISTORY
6
7. PRESENT SCENARIO
The library is divided into different sections for its easy workability . It has a
total staff of twenty members out of which there are three scientists, six technical
engineers, six assistants, two librarians, and three class IV workers. This library
consists of about 22000 books classified according to their subjects , and about
65000 journals.
Now let us discuss about the interesting places of the library in a bit introductory
manner in relation to its architectural work.
As we enter the library building we will find a reception attached with a
depositing counter. Along with this we can see that the ground floor also consist
of several other sections such as bio informatics center, head librarian(scientist)
room, publication and binding room, work places for administrative works, store
rooms, and washroom facilities. The ground floor is having a false ceiling with a
combination of wooden grid and metal perforated tiles.
Now as we switch over to the first floor , which is divided into two levels, i.e.; the
first floor level and the mezzanine floor at 1050mm from the later. The first floor
level consists of the new arrival section, the journal stack section, the seating
area provided with tables with six seats, issuing section, and a computer for
surfing purpose. The mezzanine floor is also provided with book stacks along
with the seating arrangement, and an official workplace. This floor consists of a
gypsum false ceiling.
The second floor is again provided with journal stacks and a suitable seating
arrangement . This floor consists of a coffered ceiling and suspended A.C. ducts.
7
11. There was no separate stack room but a stack area was provided all around the
reading area. For display of the books display shelves were kept. The shelves
serve two major purposes, i.e. they were openable to keep the books as well as for
display. The shelves were divided into five columns and five rows.
There was also a trolley , 950mm long for keeping some book.
11
12. There was not exactly a catalogue room but a catalogue rack for keeping the
catalogues. Earlier those catalogues were used to place and search the books but
now this system is outdated as now the people use computers for organization
and management of books . So the catalogue rack was of no use in today’s time.
12
13. The reading place for the users was provided along with the stack sections,
instead of providing a separate room for the same. This helped the users for
having an easy access to the reading material and saves their precious time.
13
14. The presentation of periodicals and journals was in a very interesting manner.
The stacks were provided with an opeable access to the periodicals provided with
the front page of the respective periodicals and journals pasted on its panels. The
new periodicals and journals were first placed in the new arrival section for
display and reading purpose in the library premises itself. Then after a week or
so these were shifted to the respective periodicals and journals stack sections
after which they can be issued by the users. There were separate stack sections
for books, periodicals and journals.
14
15. The research cubicles in a library are provided for the research scholars so that
they can conduct their research works without being disturbed from the
surrounding environment or other visitors. As this library was itself designed for
the research works thus the whole library is maintained keeping in mind the
requirements of the research scholars. So there were no research cubicles
provided separately.
15
16. It is evident from the name itself, that it’s a research institute . Thus the posts of
the Librarian as well as the Deputy Librarian were handed over to the scientists,
who can tackle these works more sincerely, efficiently and with more
responsibility. The rooms for Librarian and Deputy Librarian were placed at the
ground floor itself, along with the administrative staff-room so that they can keep
an eye on the official works which are to be performed.
16
As the word “technical” suggests “technicality”, thus the technical staff manages
the whole scenario of the placement of books, issuing of books, entry of new
arrivals. In short it manages and maintains the major records of the library in a
very technical and systematic manner. They manage the records in such an
efficient manner, whether its about maintaining the lists in the register (as
performed earlier) or its about maintaining the records by using the computerized
system. The technical staff room was provided at the first floor, where lies the
main issuing section, the new arrival section, the stack sections, etc to have an
easy access for the maintenance of records.
17. As it is understood by the name , administrative staff works as a head to all
other staff such as technical staff etc. It manages different sections such as the
new arrival section, the section of publication and binding, storage, handling,
issuing and management of books . Along with this it also keeps an eye on the
technical staff etc.
17
At the entrance of the C.D.R.I premises, there was provided a watchman’s room.
As the library was itself in the premises thus there was no watchman’s room
provided separately for the library.
18. There was no separate computer room. Only one system was provided next to the
issuing section on the first floor for surfing purposes.
18
The store rooms were provided for the storage of books, journals, periodicals and
many other materials etc. These were provided at the ground floor in such a way
that they were not in direct contact to the visitors.
19. Based on the analysis of the features provided by the building, we can conclude
that although they have covered the major part of the basic requirements by
providing different sections such as stack room, catalogue room, general reading
room, periodicals, research room, librarian’s room, deputy librarian’s room,
technical staff room, administrative staff room, night watchman’s room,
computer room, and store room, but they lacked from the provision of some of the
most important sections . These sections play a very important role in a library
and specially in a “Research Library”. They must have made the provision of
seminar room, conference room, exhibition room , audio-visual room, etc being a
well established “Research Library”.
The presence of such sections in combination with the present one, may come to
an end, where the establishment of the library will be known as the work of
masters and lead to a work of excellence.
