This presentation will cover examples of image annotation in IIIF, as well as the ability to search within annotations via the IIIF Content Search API, and protection of restricted image content through the IIIF Authentication API. The IIIF Presentation API uses web annotations to convey additional information about images. Annotations can be text, other images, links to other resources, and other multi-media content. The IIIF Content Search API allows for searching within annotations. In addition, the IIIF Authentication API provides a mechanism for user authentication to view restricted images.

CORE hosts the world’s largest collection of open access full texts, offering seamless, unrestricted access to research for citizens, researchers, libraries, software developers, funders and others. CORE’s aggregated content comes from thousands of institutional and subject repositories as well as journals and covers all research disciplines. In January 2019, CORE has hit the mark of 10 million monthly active users (10.41 million users). In September 2019, core.ac.uk has made it to the top 5k websites globally by user engagement as measured by the independent Alexa Rank, making it clearly one of the world’s most widely used Open Access services. In this talk, Petr and Nancy will explain the role of CORE in the open science ecosystem. They will introduce the solutions CORE offers for improving the delivery of research literature, including tools for discovering freely available copies of papers that might be behind publishers’ paywalls as well as a recommender system for open access literature. The use of CORE data to monitor compliance with open access policies has also recently received attention. The presenters will then reflect on the challenges in the sector and share their experience of building value-added services for the society on top of open content offered by libraries and their affiliated institutional repositories and open access journals.

With 4.7 million articles in the English version of Wikipedia, this crowd-sourced online encyclopedia is regularly one of the top-ten visited sites online. For many, this is the go-to source for a first read on a topic. The open-source and free Network Overview, Discovery and Exploration for Excel (NodeXL), which is an add-on to Microsoft Excel, enables the capture of “article networks” from Wikipedia. Such content network analysis-based data visualizations enable the development of research leads; some understandings of public conceptualizations of related concepts, peoples, events, and phenomena; the profiling of Wikipedia editors (both humans and ‘bots), and other research insights. This presentation will showcase this affordance of NodeXL and provide some ideas for practical applications of this channel of research and knowing.

Finally, we looked at the state of the application at present with an eye to the future - exploring how changes in international standards and web technologies provide an opportunity to consider what AtoM 3 might look like. The session was followed by open discussion.

Slides accompanying a presentation given by Dan Gillean on June 7th, 2018 at Open Repositories 2018, held in Bozeman, MT. Access to Memory is a web-based open source application for standards based description and access. AtoM was first released in 2008 and much of the codebase is now relying on deprecated frameworks and libraries – and at the same time, new standards and technologies are changing how our profession approaches description and access. Currently Artefactual Systems, a Canadian based company, uses a services model to support the project. Artefactual is looking ahead to AtoM3, and considering building a linked data driven platform for archival description and access. As we consider AtoM's next generation, we are also examining governance and maintenance models to sustain the project and better empower our user community as Artefactual wasn't originally intended to be AtoM's organizational home. This presentation will offer some thoughts on existing open source project governance models, challenges, and possibilities for the future.
