Employer: UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, The Netherlands.
Position Held & Description of Duties: Research Engineer,
• Hydraulic design of irrigation canal, hydraulic modeling & water management study of various
irrigation & drainage and river projects.
From November 1998 to October 2002 (48 Months)
Employer: Netherlands Engineering Consultants (NEDECO) in association with CMS-SILT-MASINA JV for
Sunsari Morang Irrigation Project (SMIP), Stage III, Phase I, Department of Irrigation (DOI), Nepal, One of the
largest Dual Managed Irrigation System (DMIS) with Command Area 68,000 Ha, funded by World Bank.
Position Held & Description of Duties: Design Engineer,
• Review of the design of the Sample Area (S13), 1350 Ha, covering plant water requirements for
irrigation from stochastic rainfall and the water availability in Chatra Main Canal (CMC); operational
rule and practice of scheduling (when, how much and where) for water delivery in canal networks up to
field outlet points; Hydraulic performance of the canal networks; Hydraulic performance of related
structures; Geometrical parameters of canals and structures and correction of errors; redesigning new
existing irrigation canals/structures including geometrical and hydro-morphological matching of
existing and designed cross section profile.
• Hydraulic and Morphological design of stable unlined irrigation and drainage canals of S14 command
area (15100 Ha) using stream power approach (i.e., DEVOS theory for suspended load and EINSTEIN
theory for bed load transport) and tractive force approach as non- scouring criterion; freeboard has also
been determined using same theory.
• Established rating curves for many canal sections and structures to test the ungated function at
bifurcation; use is made of EXCEL- spreadsheets and power formula for relationship between
discharge and water depth.
• Determined roughness formula using Nikuradse law of the wall; a variable roughness coefficient has
been conceived and established as function of Nikuradse wall roughness, water depth and type of soils
in the Terai.
• Hydraulic and geometrical design of all the concrete/gabion structures pertaining to irrigation and
drainage network development.
• Engineering design of all agricultural service roads and related structures within the project area.
• Engineering design of flood control structures along secondary, sub-secondary and tertiary channels.
• Conceived and developed right from scratch all conceptual frameworks for design on Excel
Spreadsheets.

canals command area.
• 15 days training to Water Users Groups on topic of Increasing On-farm Water Use Efficiency at key
locations within S14 canal.
• 7 days Training of control gate operators of CMC and S14 canals (i.e., 14th
Secondary canal offtakring
from CMC) were initiated on realization of target water level and target discharge with gate
adjustments during irrigation seasons.
• 7 days training to Technical Personnel in charge of Canal Operation on topic of Improving Water
Delivery Efficiency of Canal System within S14 Command Area.
• Involved in monitoring of control and operation of irrigation water through CMC and S14 canal, so as
to accelerate predominant rotational supply to the command area.
• Report writing followed by the finalization of block wise design of respective irrigation and drainage
canals were made as prerequisite before undertaking new works.
• Quality control of all geo-technical field and laboratory tests conducted by contractor, adopting geo-
technical norms as per British Standard and US, ASTM Standard to monitor the quality of earth works
in the field.
• Geo-technical data compilation and its statistical assessment for suitability over project area.
• Conceptual design of the Koshi Flood Embankment (KFE) stretching from Closure Bund to Indian
Embankment along the left bank of Koshi River; design included 19 spurs, predicting the scour depth
