The definition of
technical terms used in connation
with the stairs are as follow:
1. Baluster: This is a vertical
member which is fixed between
string and handrail to give
support to the handrail.
2. Landing: The horizontal platform
between two flight of a stair is
known as the landing.
3. Handrail: The include rail over
the string is known as a handrail.
4. Newel post: This is the vertical
member which is placed at the
ends of flight to connect the ends
of strings and handrail.
5. Riser: The undersurface of a stair
is known as the soffit, which is
connected to the treads, is
known as a riser.
6. Soffit: The undersurface of a stir
is known as the soffit. It is
generally covered with celling o
plaster.
7. Tread: The horizontal upper
portion of a step is known as a
tread
8. Waist: The thickness of structural
slab in case of an R.C.C stair is
known as a waist.

riser is known as the step.
Following are the common
type of step:
a) bluenose step: This is
generally provide at the
bottom of flight. It project
in fronts of the newel post
and its end forms a circular
quadrant.
b) Commode step: This step is
a curved riser and tread.
c) Dancing or balancing step:
These step do not radiate
from a common center.
d) Flier: this is an ordinary
step rectangular shape.
e) Winder: this is a tapering
step and it is used to
change the direction of
flight. The winders radiate
from a common center.

This is the most usual variety of
door and it consist of framework
in which panels are fitted. The
thickness of panels is about
20mm. The panels are secured in
position by grooves made inside
the edges of the framework. The
