(Detroit, MI) – On Friday September 5, 2014 at Bell Isle a student led march is taking place to end
violence in the schools to promote a healthy learning environment.
Stop the violence is the beginning of a peace movement that seeks give the youth the strength to speak
out and end the cycle of violence. Having the event at the beginning of the school year sends a positive
message for a new beginning for school children. Only in its second year the goal of the movement is
to gain momentum for the next march.
The mission of stop the violence is to encourage, promote, and teach nonviolence. To provide classes,
training, workshops, seminars, and conferences that will build coping skills and self-esteem.
The march will feature speakers, singers, dancers, and refreshments for all who chose to attend.
Reaching children on a mass level is important because it creates a sense of unity and lets them know
that they are not alone in their plight.
The genesis of this project started with Dr. Joyce Jones and her mission to end a crisis in the
community. According to the website www.stoptheviolencedetroit.org she started the program because
“over twenty years ago I heard the cry and answered the call to help our community.”
This is a nonprofit organization that depends not so much on money, but on the time and energy of
members of the community. People coming together for the purpose of peace is a message has to be
reinforced through actions and not talk.
