➤ Film synopsis - The purpose of this short
documentary style film is to give the
audience a perspective of who the characters
are by what they have in their pockets while
walking down a street and living in London.
➤ What the characters (real life citizens of
London) have in their pockets, tells the story
about who they are as people. It gives the
audience a unique perspective about who they
are and how they might give their life in a brief
way - this forms the narrative of the short
film.
3. CINEMATOGRAPHY
High angle shot of a small child as the title Pockets
appears in the right hand corner. High angle shot shows
the vulnerability of the girl and positions the audience as
having a direct perspective of these people featured in the
narrative as soon as the film starts.
High angle close up with blurred focus is used throughout the film as the director
focuses in on the items that are in the characters pockets. This demonstrates to
the audience the important of these items and why they feature in the film to
shape the narrative, The item probably changes the audiences understanding of
the person from their first ideas about who they are from seeing their face. The
item in the characters pocket tells the story of who they are.
Close up shots of the characters faces are used throughout
- this lets the audience fully see their face, their expression
and helps them to understand who each character is. It
gives the audience a direct gaze into the faces of the
owners of the pocket item.
4. LIGHTING & MISE-EN-SCENE
➤ High key lighting is used all the way through the film to show
the audience each detail of the characters.
➤ The screen shots below show how the high key lighting is
used and show all the detail of the people in the film narrative
5. EDITING
➤ The style of the film is factual, like a short documentary and
the dining is slow paced and direct cuts that cut between each
shot.
➤ The editing is straight forward to give a clear cut between
each scene.
➤ A single straight cut is made between each shot
➤ The end of the film cuts to black for the credits to roll
6. SOUND
➤ There are only two types of sound in the short film, Non diegetic - the soundtrack
that overlays the dialogue which is the second typeof sound - the diegetic sound.
➤ Diegetic sound - this the sound that is part of the film world - in this film it is
dialogue and for one character - the sound of chewing
➤ Non diegetic sound - this is the overlay of the soundtrack for this short film. The
soundtrack helps to add atmosphere and emotion.
7. WHY ANALYZING THIS FILM HELPS MY RESEARCH AND PLANNING MY OWN PRODUCTION
Analyzing this film helps me planning my
own production because I am prating my
understanding of shot types between my
Foundation portfolio coursework and
Advanced level coursework. This helps me
know to set up more shots on screen and see
the correct lay out of shot types.
Analyzing this found helps my planning my of
the Advanced level production because I am
thinking about how the audience responds to
different narratives. This film helps because it
is good to look at different film forms - like a
short documentary and helps me to think of
short and different ideas for my own film that
will target audiences of short films.
