2. Through the Formula SAE competition,Team Swinburne offers engineering and business students a major
project designing, building, marketing and racing a formula-style racecar. Each year, students have their skills and
knowledge pushed to the limit producing innovative, robust and validated designs to ensure the legacy ofTeam
Swinburne continues to grow.
Swinburne University ofTechnology has a proud history with
Formula SAE Australasia, having fielded a team in the event
every year since its inception in 2000.Thanks to the University’s
hands-on learning approach and industry connections,Team
Swinburne’s cars are always competitive and have frequently
graced the top of the leaderboard.
In 2011Team Swinburne became the first dedicated
electric team in the Formula SAE Australasia competition, and
have gone from strength to strength in the years since, with
2014 seeingTeam Swinburne’s world ranking for SAE electric
vehicles jump to 28, with our lightest electric vehicle to date,
and our best performance in the overall competition since the
switch to electric vehicles.
In 2015,Team Swinburne will be aiming to build on success
from 2014 by producing another lightweight electric vehicle
and focusing on reliability and consistency of performance.As
ever, theTeam’s success depends not only on the commitment
and dedication of our team members, but also the continued
support and enthusiasm of our sponsors.

Team Swinburne actively spread the word about our project to the
broader motoring community in Melbourne.Already in 2015 we
have presented our 2014 car atThe Annual Picnic at Hanging Rock
Car Show.Attended by thousands of people, the show is a major
event on the vintage and club car circuit.
Other appearances for our car in 2015 at high profile events
include the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix in March and the
Melbourne EV Expo in April. In previous years the team has
participated in a number of other prestigious events, includingTop
Gear Live, the Engineers Australia Expo and Motor Week.
Team Swinburne is also very active in the local community in and
around Hawthorn. In 2014, we presented at the Glenferrie Festival,
a community night at the Hawthorn Library arranged by the
Booroondara City Council and events hosted by the Alternative
Technology Association, and took our car to visit students at
Benalla Secondary College, a visit which received favourable
coverage on television by WIN News and online by the RACV’s
Royal Auto.
Throughout the year we also conduct a host of fundraising events.

BBQs hosted outside supermarkets, hardware stores and other
venues, along with our very popular trivia nights.
