2. CURRENT ENERGY SCENARIO AND NEED FOR
INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS
Energy crisis in Pakistan is an ever growing alarming issue and
the last one decade has witnessed severe power crisis.
Many factors can be attributed to the issue being addressed;
however, there are not many solutions that have been
implemented on a large scale to combat the problem.
Prolonged practice of the conventional means to energy
production is not only contributing to global warming and
climate change but is also a cause of economic crises.
3. Scientists and experts are of the view that it is high time that
Pakistan makes a move towards renewable energy resources.
The growing population demands sustainable ways to address
energy crisis that can help strengthen the economic sector as
well.
Gasification of biomass can be a reliable solution for the
industrial sector to the pressing issue in Pakistan.
Developing countries across the globe are investing in energy
through biomass gasification technology, keeping in view the
environmental sustainability.
4. BIOMASS GASIFICATION TECHNOLOGY
Biomass gasification technology employees the
feedstock/biomass such as rice husk, wheat straw and other
crop residues as an efficient energy material.
Introduction of BGTs in Pakistan will not only help curb the
growing energy needs but also take development a step
ahead.
This technology is expected to bring about a flouring socio-
economic change in the society.
5. PROJECT RATIONALE
The Global Environmental Facility approved a project entitled
“Promoting Sustainable Energy Production Use from Biomass in
Pakistan.”
Objectives
To reduce green house gas emissions;
To investment in Biomass Gasification Technologies in SMEs in
Pakistan and
To build the capacities of key market players in dealing with BGTs.
6. UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization)
Established in 1968.
Extensive and successful experience in industrial development
cooperation.
Over 50 projects covering many industrial sectors.
Successfully implemented the project on Biomass Gasification
Technology in developing countries such as Africa and India and is now
implementing in Pakistan.
7. CAS-EN NUST
NUST established in 1991.
The Centre for Advance Studies in Energy (CAS-EN) as a
constituent of NUST is fully engaged to provide impetus to
energy sector programs.
The main objective of CAS-EN is to endeavour for the provision
of sustainable supply of energy at affordable rates with a
greater share of renewable in the energy mix to reduce
environmental footprint.
