THE CLIMATE COMPASS
Biomass potential has not been fully realized
in Pakistan due to the country’s
fragmented agricultural value chain
which remains informal and
undocumented. This has been a major
reason behind limited development of
biomass capabilities since procurement of
waste from a disparate agricultural sector
becomes a major barrier. Large quantities of
agriculture stubble continue to being
burned causing problems of smog and air
pollution in Punjab
Aside from some individual companies with
captive biomass plants, there has been little
development due to time, cost and
expertise constraints.
The primary focus of BioVentures is to set
up a centralised facility to nurture biomass
potential from crop harvesting residue such
as rice husk, wheat straw, etc., in order to
ensure high quality and sustainable
biomass with long-term contracts.
The project has a
cumulative
emission reduction
potential of
approximately 15
MtCO2e over 10
years
The primary objective of the feasibility is to establish technical and commercial
viability covering the following key areas: supply-side analysis, demand analysis,
financial and non-financial business case.
The feasibility study will be completed by October 2023 which will be followed
by a pilot and then a full scale launch towards the end of 2024.
BIOVENTURES TECHNICAL
WORKING GROUP
BioVentures is being co-developed by
all relevant stakeholders including
brands & coalitions, manufacturers,
biomass experts and project preparatory
& financial experts. To guide the project
from the perspective of the
manufacturers/off-takers, the
BioVentures Technical Working
Group has been formed, which involves
sustainability leads from our member
companies: Mahmood Group,
Sapphire, Gul Ahmed, Artistic
Milliners and Masood Roomi.
The Berlin Energy Transition
Dialogue is a platform that brings
together leading energy experts from
around the world to discuss the global
green energy transition.
Wardah Zaman, Program Manager at
NZP, attended BETD Conference 2023
to explore the potential for biogas in
Pakistan's energy transition and energy
security. Alongside the BETD, Wardah
visited a biogas facility in Berlin, and
also met with solar thermal technology
providers.

Journeys. See below our top picks from KP for
this quarter:
EMISSION FACTOR DATABASE FOR
PAKISTAN'S TEXTILE SECTOR
One of the biggest obstacles for companies measuring their
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly Scope 3
emissions, is the lack of access to relevant emission factors. In
the absence of such factors, companies resort to using spend-
based accounting, a less reliable method for GHG calculation
and long-term target setting, or they use factors that are US/UK
based and not representative of value chain activities in the
Global South.
To help the textile sector overcome this challenge, we are
working closely with our member companies and actively
seeking partnerships with consultants for advisory and
technical assistance to build out a comprehensive emission
factor database over the next few months. If you would like to
contribute your inputs or expertise in the process, please get in
touch with us!

NET ZERO PAKISTAN MEMBERS' TOOLKIT
Transitioning to net zero emissions is a complex and challenging
process that requires significant operational changes for
companies. This process is filled with technical jargon, an
overwhelming amount of information related to standards,
methodologies, and specific actions required, which can make it
confusing and daunting for companies to navigate.
To demystify this process for companies, NZP has developed a
Net Zero Toolkit, with inputs from our signatories and partner
organizations such as CDP, Alliance for Climate Action Mexico
and Altruistiq. The toolkit breaks down the net zero journey into
six main stages: Commit, Measure, Disclose, Define, Reduce
and Advocate. For each stage, the toolkit provides an exhaustive
checklist of actions, industry best practices, and resources.
The toolkit is an invaluable technical resource for companies of
all sectors seeking to initiate or accelerate action toward their
net zero ambitions. It will be officially launched in May 2023 for
larger industry audience.

The first NZP Town Hall of the year, and ninth in the overall
series was hosted by Gul Ahmed in Karachi on 13 March 2023.
The event was divided into two sessions: one was co-led by
Andrew Martin, Executive Vice President, Sustainable
Apparel Coalition (SAC) and Joyce Tsoi, Director of
Collective Action Programs, SAC; and the second was an
expert session conducted by Katie Murphy, Senior Consultant
from EcoAct.
The knowledge session was focused on Forest, Land, and
Agriculture (FLAG) emissions guidance for member
companies aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative.
The session covered both theoretical and practical aspects of
setting FLAG targets, with a focus on key considerations and
challenges.
According to SBTi, businesses with land-intensive value chain
activities and those in any other sector that have land-related
emissions covering 20% or more of their overall footprint
are now required to set FLAG science-based targets. While
best practice guidance is still being developed for capturing
farm-level data, EcoAct recommended companies to first
assess whether FLAG is relevant to them by identifying and
mapping all land-related emissions in their operations and
supply chains to estimate its total share across all three scopes.
01
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Over 81% energy used in the 221 textile
manufacturing facilities in Pakistan comes
from fossil fuels, with renewable energy
contributing less than 2% to the total energy
mix. These statistics reemphasize the need
for the textile sector in Pakistan to set
ambitious science based targets, in order to
drive decarbonization actions at the speed
and scale required.
02 There is a need for more textile
manufacturing facilities in Pakistan to
implement the Higg Index tools throughout
their supply chain so that there is accurate,
real-time data coming out of Pakistan on the
scale of energy transformation required as
well as progress towards emissions
reductions.

200+ ATTENDEES JOIN NZP WEBINAR WITH H&M
& US APPAREL
All stakeholders (especially those in the developed world) must
come together to propose and implement high-impact
solutions - NZP is facilitating this by partnering with global
brands, coalitions and experts
Brands have very ambitious climate targets via SBTi and RE100
- this means that all suppliers of these brands must also set net
zero and take action to switch to renewable energy sources
There is a strong business case for the net zero transition.
Although the payback may not seem attractive in the short
term, forward-thinking leaders who invest in sustainability now
will reap benefits in the long-term.
In March, NZP hosted a webinar on turbocharging the net zero
transition for Pakistan's textile & apparel sector. The webinar was
hosted in collaboration with our partners, PRGMEA and PTC. The
panel featured Peter Ford (Project Lead for Climate at H&M), Asif
Malik (CEO of US Apparel), Dr. Ayyazuddin Malik (PRGMEA) and
Talha Khan (Executive Director of PET)
Here are some of our key takeaways:
On 30th March, Race to Zero hosted a
