Domestic sewage and industrial effluents • Solids easy to remove • Nitrates, phosphates, other nutrients, toxic metal ions, and organic compounds- difficult to remove • Domestic sewage contains biodegradable organic matter which readily decomposes • It is possible to estimate the amount of biodegradable organic matter in sewage water by measuring Biochemical Oxygen Demand
