2. TITLE: In-vitro (anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic), in-vivo (anti-diabetic)
studies and HPTLC densitometric determination of phytochemical
constituents from Houttuynia cordata.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Collection and drying of the leaves.
2. Authentication of the plant specimen.
3. Extraction of the plant components.
4. Preliminary phytochemical screening.
5. To carry out in-vitro anti-inflammatory and anti- diabetic activity studies.
6. To carry out in-vivo anti-diabetic activity.
7. HPTLC fingerprint analysis of extract.
8. HPTLC quantification of the bio active compounds.
3. SUMMARY OF THE WORKS COMPLETED TILL DATE:
1. LITERATURE SURVEY:
• The flowering and perennial herbal plant, Houttuynia cordata Thunb.
(HC) belongs to the family of Saururaceae, which is found in Asian
countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Japan and India.
It commonly grows in the hilly areas of moist and shady places with an
altitude of 300-2600m.
• It has been reported to contain a variety of compounds like flavonoids,
quercetin, and phenolic compounds. In the literature, several authors have
been reported about the anti-oxidant activity, anti-allergic, anti-bacterial,
anti-leukemic, anti-Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), and anti-
cancer properties of H.cordata.
• It has long been used in China both as an edible vegetable and in
traditional medicine used in the treatment of various illness and diseases.
So, the Ministry of Health has been officially identified as both drug and
food development potential of one of the plant resources.
4. • Houttuynia cordata has anti-SARS activities. Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS) is a life threatening form of pneumonia caused by
SARS coronavirus (SARS-COV). From late 2002 to mid 2003, it infected
more than 8000 people worldwide, of which a majority of case were found
in China. Owing to the absence of definitive therapeutic Western
medicines, HC Thunb. was shortlisted by Chinese scientists to tackle SARS
problems it is conventionally used to treat pneumonia.
• Although anti-viral drug and vaccine development are being undertaken
for the prevention of disease, presently there are no effective drug
molecules available to date against COVID-19.
• Several scientific studies also reveal that the extract of H.cordata has the
potential to inhibit the replication of the various viral strains including
SARS- COV.
5. • Plant profile of Houttuynia cordata comes under the taxonomy hierarchy
as follows:
Kingdom – Plantae
Order – Piperales
Family – Saururaceae
Genus – Houttuynia
Species – H.cordata
• The vernacular or local name of H.cordata is known by the different
regions of its distribution.
Mizo name : Uithinthang
Arunachal Pradesh : Amuli
South Korea : E-Sung-Cho
China : Yu-Xing-Cao
Japan : Dokudami
6. 2. COLLECTION AND AUTHENTICATION OF PLANT MATERIALS:
Fresh leaves of Houttuynia cordata was collected from Tanhril, Aizawl,
Mizoram, India. Authentication was done in Shillong, Eastern Circle,
Botanical Survey of India. The specimen has been identified as Houttuynia
cordata Thunb. ( Saururaceae) with the reference BSI/ERC/Tech/2021/287.
3. EXTRACTIVE VALUES:
200g of powdered materials of the leaves of Houttuynia cordata was
extracted using maceration method with the solvents petroleum ether,
chloroform and methanol separately. The extraction was carried out and the
solvents were recovered by Steam distillation. The concentrated extracts
were kept in refrigerator at 4ºC for further use. The extraction yields of the
plant for petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol solvents are 1%, 1.5%
and 2.5% respectively.
