Mission Statement of Better Boys Foundation (BBF): To provide area youth and their families
experiences that enhance emotional, social, academic, and career development.
What is Feminist Fridays @1512? Feminist Fridays @1512 is a discussion group designed for
high school young women ages 14-18. This program gives them a space to learn about feminist
views and a place to reflect about themselves and the world around them.
The Mission of Feminist Fridays @1512 is to provide a forum for young women to critically
analyze the role of gender in their lives. The goal of the program is to give women knowledge
that informs them of the world and empowers so they can advocate for other women and
themselves.
Why is it necessary? Feminist Fridays @1512 is necessary to expand the young women’
knowledge on social issues affecting women. The young women at BBF will not only learn
about topics, but will also develop opinions about these topics and share their opinions with
peers. Creating a space for the young women to critically think about the topics and make
personal connections cultivates a deeper understanding of the role women play in our society.
The young women will also gain skills such as analysis, critical thinking, and public speaking.
How Feminist Fridays @1512 Works: Each discussion will last roughly one hour, and will be led
by a staff member or volunteer at the Better Boys Foundation (BBF). The discussion leader will
use many sources of rhetoric, such as news articles, videos, essays, and relevant stories to
facilitate the discussions. The groups will be formed solely by interest, and attendance will be
voluntary. CCLCP students have designed a curriculum filled with readings and activities for the
young women at BBF to reflect on.
Role of the Facilitator: The job of the facilitator is to keep the teenage young women at BBF
engaged in the discussion. The facilitator of the discussion should ask questions and present
thought-provoking material so that the young women learn from the discussion. The facilitator
must be respectful of the young women’s opinions and take into account each individual
member’s personal experience. The facilitator should create and maintain a safe and positive
environment.
Role of Discussion Participants: Participants are required to show respect and listen to others
while they are talking. The participants are encouraged to participate, ask questions, as well as
voice their opinions on a topic. Participants are expected to act in a mature manner, and respect
the facilitator and their peers.
