Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. The
age of organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million of
years.
The theory that fossil fuels formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants by exposure to heat and pressure in
the earth’s crust over million of years was first introduced by georgius Agricola in 1556 and latter Mikhail lomonosov
in the 18th century.
Types of fossil fuel
Three main
types of
fossil fuel
are:
COAL
CRUDE
OIL
NATURAL
GAS
COAL
Coal is combustible black
or a brownish black
sedimentary rock usually
occurring in rock strata
in layers
Crude oil
Crude oil are naturally occurring
black liquid found in geological
formation beneath the earth’s
surface. It is one of the major
source of energy in present world.
Natural gas
It is flammable gas,
consisting largely of
methane and other
hydrocarbons ,occurring
naturally underground
and used as a fuel.
Fossil fuel are of great importance because they can be burnt producing significant amount of energy per
unit weight.
They are used to run furnaces to melt metal ore.
They are used in internal combustion engines to run vehicles
They are used in generating electricity.
They are used in construction or roads.
They are used as feedstock in petrochemical industry.
 easily available : since it is such a good source of energy, more and more extraction are going on every day. With
the advancement of science and technology the refineries and the extraction procedures have improved a lot.
Note: they are non renewable. They should be used carefully. Once used they can’t be replenished.
 produce large amount of energy : fossil fuel are easily combustible. So they can produce huge amount of energy in
small amount of source.
 high calorific value : all energy produce has some calorific value. The more is the calorific value the more effective
is the energy.
 stability : fossil fuel are composed of carbon and hydrogen molecules. This makes them very stable. They do not
form any other compound if stored in metallic cans for long period of time. Thus it is easy to store.
 pollution is the major disadvantage of fossil fuels. The burning of fossil fuels leads to the production of
co2 gas resulting in green house effect which contributes in global warming.
 it also produces many harmful gases which mix wit rain water to form acid rain.
 on burning they release unpleasant odour.
 causes water pollution when split on water. It leads to the death of aquatic life as it obstructs the oxygen
supply of water.
