THEROTICAL ASPECTS TO THE STUDAY
INTRODUCTION:-
The Factories Act 1948 is a comprehensive piece of legislation all the aspects regarding the
Factories.
Under the rule making power practically all the states have framed their and regulations thereby
ensuring maximum advantages in order to trace history of legislation which resulted in legislation
The factories act1948 we to go back to the last decade of the 19th
century. Till the end of 19 th.,
Century thereby was no control of the state over the conditions of employment and condition of
employees did according to their liking and advantages .after great objections by the employers
the Indian factories act 1881 was passed which give limited measure of protection to children
provisions for fencing of some dangerous parts of machinery were also there . in 1980
government of India appointed a factories commission and on their recommendation the act of
1981 was passed in 1911another act was passed after taking into account the reports of smith
committee and factory labour commission.

SAFETY
Meaning:- Safety is a basic ordinary requirement in a factory. Unless a body, mind life of
workers is secured smooth and proper working cannot be ensured in any factory. As indicated
earlier the object of this legislation was to ameliorate working conditions and to

disablement and sudden misfortunes affecting the victims and their dependents.

WHY SAFETY IS REQUIRED?
Industrial Production depends on the following factors:-
Men
Material
Machines
Environment
For Efficient production, not all the above factors should have any interruption.
Men – Skillful & fit
Material- Sufficient Raw material of good quality
Machines –Good design and working order
Environment –Proper lighting, Good ventilation, Less vibration, Noisy location etc.
“Safety in a industrial establishment is required to avoid any interruptions into all the above
factors viz: Man, material, machine and environment.’’

STATUTORY PROVISIONS OF SAFETY IN INDIA
According to factories act, 1948, the statutory provisions regarding the safety of the workers are
stated in the sections 21 to 41.they are
1. Fencing of Machinery: Sec. 21 (1) contains the provisions regarding the safety by fencing of
machinery. The sec lays down the following shall be security fenced by safeguards of substantial
construction, which shall be kept in position when the parts of machinery are in motion or in use.
2. Work on or near machinery: It is necessary to examine any part of the machinery while it is
motion. Only a specially trained adult worker wearing light-fitting clothing should carry out the
examination and lubrication of the machinery, while in motion
3. Employment of young person on dangerous machines: Sec.23 lays down the general rule
no young person shall work at any machine so prescribed under sub sec (2) of sec 23 by the state
govt. However, they can be allowed to work if,
 They have been fully instructed as to dangers arising out of in connection
With the machine and the precautions to be observed, and
 Has received sufficient training in work at the machine or is under adequate supervision by a
person who has through knowledge and experience of the machine.
4. Striking gear and devices for cutting off power (sec.24).
In every factory, suitable striking gear or other efficient mechanical appliance has to be provided,
Maintained and used to driving belts.
5. Self acting machines (Sec.25):
No travelling part of a self-acting machine in any factory and no material carried thereon shall be
allowed to run on its outward or inward traverse within a distance of 18 inches from any fixed
structure, which is not a part of the machine, if a person is liable to pass over the space over
which it runs.

6. Casting of new machinery (Sec26):
All machinery driven by power, every set screw, bolt or key or any reviling shaft, spindle,
Wheel or pinion, spur, worm and other toothed or friction –gearing has to be properly encased or
guarded in order to prevent danger to the workers.
7. Prohibition of employment of women and children near cotton openers (Sec27):
Women and child workers are prohibited to be employed in any part of a factory for pressing
cotton in which a cotton opener is at work.
8. Hoist, lifts, lifting machines (Sec28&29): Lifting machines, chains, ropes and lifting tackles
must be of good mechanical construction sound material and adequate Strength and free from
defects. They are to be properly maintained and thoroughly examined by a competent person at
least once in every 6 month.
9. Revolving machinery (Sec 30):
The maximum safe working peripheral speed of every grind stone abrasive wheel shall be
permanently affixed. Safe working peripheral speed of every revolving vassal, cage basket,
flywheel, pulley or disc has also to be ensured.
10. Pressure plant (Sec 31):
In any factory, operation is carried on at pressure above the atmospheric pressure, effective
arrangements shall be taken to ensure that the safe working pressure is not exceeded.
11. Floors, stairs and means of Access (Sec 32):
In every factory all floors, steps, passages and gangways shall be of sound construction and
properly kept and maintained.

12. Pits, sumps, openings in floors (Sec33):
Every fixed vessel, sump, tank, pit or opening in the ground or in a floor, which may be a source
of danger shall be either securely or securely fenced.
13. Excessive weights (Sec 34): No person is to be employed in any factory to lift, carry or move
any load as heavy as is likely to cause him injury.
14. Protection of eyes (Sec 35.):
The state government may require the provision of effective screens or suitable goggles if the
risk of injury to the eyes is caused from particles or fragments thrown off in the manufacturing
process or from exposure to excessive light.
15. Precaution against Dangerous Fumes (Sec 36):
In any factory, no person shall be allowed to enter any chamber, tank, vat, pipe flue or other
confined space in which dangerous fumes are likely to be present to an extent involving risks to
persons.
16. Explosive or Inflammable Dust, Gas (Sec 37):
All practicable measures have to be taken to prevent explosion by, effective enclosure of plant
and machinery, removal or prevention of accumulation of dust, gas etc and exclusion or effective
enclosure of all possible sources of ignition.
17. Precaution in case of fire (Sec 38):
Sec.38 of the act for the precaution of fire in the factory .the general precaution in this aspect in
tat every factory shall be provided with such means to escape in case of fire as may be
prescribed, the following other precautions against fire shall also be taken,
a) Exit doors of room shall not be locked so that they cannot be easily opened and all such doors
unless they are sliding type shall be constructed to open outwards.

b) Every window door of other exit affording a means of in case of fire other than ordinary exit
shall be distinctively marked in the language of the majority of the employed persons in red
letters of adequate size or by some other effective and clearly understandable sign etc.
18. Power to require Specification of defective parts or test of stability (Sec 39):
The factory inspector to serve on the manager of a factory to furnish specification of defective
parts or he may order the manager to carry out tests as he may specify and to inform him of the
results.
19. Safety of building & Machinery (Sec 40):
Every factory should adopt the measures to ensure the safety of the buildings and machinery. The
factory must employ the required safety officers according to the no.of workers working in the
factory.
20. Power to makes rules (Sec41):
The state govt. has the power to make rules to supplement the provisions relating to safety
contained in the act.

What to do during emergency?
1. Fire
2. Electronic Shock
3. Gas leakage

1. Fire: Shout “fire –fire”
Break the glass of nearest manual call points.
Inform the fire & safety personnel immediately.
Follow all emergency rules.
Switch off the electrical supply to the concern area /m/c.
Extinguish the fire by using suitable fire extinguisher.
If fire is big, use Fire Hydrant System.
If fire is uncontrollable, evacuate the area ASAP.
If defined evaluation routes are not accessible then leave the area by another routes.
If anybody is trapped inside, inform inside, inform the Fire & Safety Personnel.
2. Electrical shock: Dissociate the casualty from the electrical contact
: - Switch off the main supply.
: - Remove the electric wire by help of dry wooden / plastic bar.
The rescuer should stand on dry wooden plate / rubber mat etc.
Immediately inform to fire & safety personnel.
Do not touch the casualty by bare hands even after the cutting of electric supply.
To dissipate the static charges from the body of casualty, earth the body.
Check breathings rate of the injured person.
Give him artificial respiration viz :
Mouth to mouth respiration.
Pressing of chest 15 times in 70.5 seconds etc.
Give him any mild hot drinks.
Transport to hospital.
Immediately inform to fire & safety personnel.
Do not touch any electric appliances for ON /OFF purpose.
Put off all fires in the surrounding vicinity.
In case of enclosed area, open the door & window for ventilation.
Segregate the area by using roaps and straps.
Do not allow any body to enter into this area.

3. Gas leakage
If leakage is in cylinder, remove it to the open space for dispersing the gas into the atmosphere.
If leaking cylinder catches fire:--
Extinguish it by dint of damb clothes (in case of small fire)
Apply water over the body of cylinder for the safe distance.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITY OF SAFETY COMMITTEE

 Conduct training & awareness session for safety for the employees.
 The committee is required to meet once a month to review safety audit points & analyze
accidents actions.
 Follow up on the action plan as per the schedule agreed with different departments.
 Safety audits are to be conducted on a monthly basis to ascertain whether all the safety
requirements within the facility are adhered to properly or not. All departments/locations of
respective units are required to be audited as per schedule is to be made for a calendar year.
 It is the responsibility of safety committee to advise, provide and ensure through continuous
improvement the following :-
- Spreading health and safety awareness amongst employees.
- User /Employee friendly productive environment.
- Prevent injuries and properly loss.
- Raise safety awareness.
- Raise housekeeping awareness.
- Identify weakness in existing housekeeping and safety systems and correct the situations.
- Promote the policy “ A place for everything and everything in its place & safe’’
 There will be a safety committee in every plant of the group.
 Safety committee is a forum that looks after various aspects of health& safety in all the
facilities. It will have equal representation from staff and workman and maximum of 8
members.

All manufacturing areas are covered of imperial auto industries limited in this study.
Like- Maintenance, Tool room, Dispatch, store, Moulding, Extrusion, Nylon, Mixing, Dryline,
Balding.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The research and methodology adopted for the present study has been systematic and was done in
accordance to the objectives set which has been detailed as below.

Closed-ended questionnaire are used to collect data from Operators.
Sample size
The total no. of Operators are included in the survey are 50.
Sampling Method Used
To get more accurate result, Random study method is used.

FINDING
According to this study,
 86 % employees know how to use fire extinguishers in case of fire. In addition, 14 %
employees don’t know how to use fire extinguisher .because these all 14 % employees are
new in company.
 78 % employees said ventilation and lighting facilities is very good in working area of iAi
.and 12 % employees said good, 8% employees said average & 2%employees said ventilation
and lighting facilities is poor in working area.
 Satisfaction level of employees regarding company’s safety norms: 54% employees are
satisfied by company’s safety norms. In addition, 30% employees are moderates and 02%
employees are dissatisfied and14percentageemployees are highly dissatisfied by company
safety norms.
 Working time of 34% employees is less than one year at iAi. And working time of 20%
employee’s b/w 1-3year.and 46 % employees working time at iAi is more than 3 year.
 Maximum employees said company provides all safety measure based on work requirement.
 78 % employees said emergency and exit doors, syron & emergency bells available in
company premises in case of any emergency.

SUGGESTION
 Company may conduct seminars on safety for increase the awareness of employees.
 Company may provide sufficient safety measures to employees for reducing accident.
 Company can provide proper training to employees.
 Company may reduce workplace stress.
 Company may give reward to those employees, who continue following all safety provisions.
CONCLUSION
The imperial auto industries limited was established in 1969.and company head office is located
in Faridabad .IAI is an integrated manufacturer of fluid transmission products (FTP’s)
In2007, IAI ltd established new plant in Pantnagar (Rudrapur).In this plant company started
manufacturing of rubber-molded parts, brake tube assay and in present time company
manufacture large varieties of products like, Fabricated pipes & CNG tubing, Silicon hoses
IRIS/ZIP model parts. In present, time 750 employees working here.
I started our project with the organization study, and I passed through the various department of
the organization like, Moulding, Extrusion, Nylon, and Dryline. After organization study, I
selected research topic safety at imperial auto industries ltd.
I carried on our research through the descriptive research methodology in which prepared
50Structured questionnaire with 10 questions & demographic information and surveyed
employees, the result and finding of the study are- in our survey we found that very few accident
are meet and employees are more satisfied by lighting and ventilation facilities in working areas
of organization.
I am very much thankful for the wonderful accommodation facilities from iAi ltd & continue
support of HR dept in completion my project. I hope this experience will surely help me in my
future and in my shaping career.

  • 7. 7 THEROTICAL ASPECTS TO THE STUDAY INTRODUCTION:- The Factories Act 1948 is a comprehensive piece of legislation all the aspects regarding the Factories. Under the rule making power practically all the states have framed their and regulations thereby ensuring maximum advantages in order to trace history of legislation which resulted in legislation The factories act1948 we to go back to the last decade of the 19th century. Till the end of 19 th., Century thereby was no control of the state over the conditions of employment and condition of employees did according to their liking and advantages .after great objections by the employers the Indian factories act 1881 was passed which give limited measure of protection to children provisions for fencing of some dangerous parts of machinery were also there . in 1980 government of India appointed a factories commission and on their recommendation the act of 1981 was passed in 1911another act was passed after taking into account the reports of smith committee and factory labour commission. provisions in any factory or in any class or description of factories of such further device and measures is so securing the safety of persons employed there in as it may deem necessary.
  • 8. 8 SAFETY Meaning:- Safety is a basic ordinary requirement in a factory. Unless a body, mind life of workers is secured smooth and proper working cannot be ensured in any factory. As indicated earlier the object of this legislation was to ameliorate working conditions and to Provide with effective measures of safety of the workers from accident causing partial or total disablement and sudden misfortunes affecting the victims and their dependents. “Things under control’’ “Free from danger’’ “Accidental loss’’

  • 10. 10 WHY SAFETY IS REQUIRED? Industrial Production depends on the following factors:- Men Material Machines Environment For Efficient production, not all the above factors should have any interruption. Men – Skillful & fit Material- Sufficient Raw material of good quality Machines –Good design and working order Environment –Proper lighting, Good ventilation, Less vibration, Noisy location etc. “Safety in a industrial establishment is required to avoid any interruptions into all the above factors viz: Man, material, machine and environment.’’
  • 11. 11 STATUTORY PROVISIONS OF SAFETY IN INDIA According to factories act, 1948, the statutory provisions regarding the safety of the workers are stated in the sections 21 to 41.they are 1. Fencing of Machinery: Sec. 21 (1) contains the provisions regarding the safety by fencing of machinery. The sec lays down the following shall be security fenced by safeguards of substantial construction, which shall be kept in position when the parts of machinery are in motion or in use. 2. Work on or near machinery: It is necessary to examine any part of the machinery while it is motion. Only a specially trained adult worker wearing light-fitting clothing should carry out the examination and lubrication of the machinery, while in motion 3. Employment of young person on dangerous machines: Sec.23 lays down the general rule no young person shall work at any machine so prescribed under sub sec (2) of sec 23 by the state govt. However, they can be allowed to work if,  They have been fully instructed as to dangers arising out of in connection With the machine and the precautions to be observed, and  Has received sufficient training in work at the machine or is under adequate supervision by a person who has through knowledge and experience of the machine. 4. Striking gear and devices for cutting off power (sec.24). In every factory, suitable striking gear or other efficient mechanical appliance has to be provided, Maintained and used to driving belts. 5. Self acting machines (Sec.25): No travelling part of a self-acting machine in any factory and no material carried thereon shall be allowed to run on its outward or inward traverse within a distance of 18 inches from any fixed structure, which is not a part of the machine, if a person is liable to pass over the space over which it runs.

Casting of new machinery (Sec26): All machinery driven by power, every set screw, bolt or key or any reviling shaft, spindle, Wheel or pinion, spur, worm and other toothed or friction –gearing has to be properly encased or guarded in order to prevent danger to the workers. 7. Prohibition of employment of women and children near cotton openers (Sec27): Women and child workers are prohibited to be employed in any part of a factory for pressing cotton in which a cotton opener is at work. 8. Hoist, lifts, lifting machines (Sec28&29): Lifting machines, chains, ropes and lifting tackles must be of good mechanical construction sound material and adequate Strength and free from defects. They are to be properly maintained and thoroughly examined by a competent person at least once in every 6 month. 9. Revolving machinery (Sec 30): The maximum safe working peripheral speed of every grind stone abrasive wheel shall be permanently affixed. Safe working peripheral speed of every revolving vassal, cage basket, flywheel, pulley or disc has also to be ensured. 10. Pressure plant (Sec 31): In any factory, operation is carried on at pressure above the atmospheric pressure, effective arrangements shall be taken to ensure that the safe working pressure is not exceeded. 11. Floors, stairs and means of Access (Sec 32): In every factory all floors, steps, passages and gangways shall be of sound construction and properly kept and maintained.

Pits, sumps, openings in floors (Sec33): Every fixed vessel, sump, tank, pit or opening in the ground or in a floor, which may be a source of danger shall be either securely or securely fenced. 13. Excessive weights (Sec 34): No person is to be employed in any factory to lift, carry or move any load as heavy as is likely to cause him injury. 14. Protection of eyes (Sec 35.): The state government may require the provision of effective screens or suitable goggles if the risk of injury to the eyes is caused from particles or fragments thrown off in the manufacturing process or from exposure to excessive light. 15. Precaution against Dangerous Fumes (Sec 36): In any factory, no person shall be allowed to enter any chamber, tank, vat, pipe flue or other confined space in which dangerous fumes are likely to be present to an extent involving risks to persons. 16. Explosive or Inflammable Dust, Gas (Sec 37): All practicable measures have to be taken to prevent explosion by, effective enclosure of plant and machinery, removal or prevention of accumulation of dust, gas etc and exclusion or effective enclosure of all possible sources of ignition. 17. Precaution in case of fire (Sec 38): Sec.38 of the act for the precaution of fire in the factory .the general precaution in this aspect in tat every factory shall be provided with such means to escape in case of fire as may be prescribed, the following other precautions against fire shall also be taken, a) Exit doors of room shall not be locked so that they cannot be easily opened and all such doors unless they are sliding type shall be constructed to open outwards.
  • 14. 14 b) Every window door of other exit affording a means of in case of fire other than ordinary exit shall be distinctively marked in the language of the majority of the employed persons in red letters of adequate size or by some other effective and clearly understandable sign etc. 18. Power to require Specification of defective parts or test of stability (Sec 39): The factory inspector to serve on the manager of a factory to furnish specification of defective parts or he may order the manager to carry out tests as he may specify and to inform him of the results. 19. Safety of building & Machinery (Sec 40): Every factory should adopt the measures to ensure the safety of the buildings and machinery. The factory must employ the required safety officers according to the no.of workers working in the factory. 20. Power to makes rules (Sec41): The state govt. has the power to make rules to supplement the provisions relating to safety contained in the act.
  • 15. 15 ACCIDENT An undesired and unexpected event, which may or may not cause of property damage. “Accident doesn’t happen but they are caused.” Cause of accidents:- Unsafe Act- 88% Unsafe Condition- 10% Non-preventable / God’s act -2% Thus, 98 % accidents are preventable LOSSES DUE TO ACCIDENT Direct Loss Indirect loss Damage to building, Loss of payment to M/c, contents etc. The injured person Injuries & Death loss of expertise and Skill of the victims Payment by way of Loss of schedule & Compensation to the income Accident victims Loss of profit due to business interruption Continuing expenses Loss of market etc.

  • 17. 17 1. Fire: Shout “fire –fire” Break the glass of nearest manual call points. Inform the fire & safety personnel immediately. Follow all emergency rules. Switch off the electrical supply to the concern area /m/c. Extinguish the fire by using suitable fire extinguisher. If fire is big, use Fire Hydrant System. If fire is uncontrollable, evacuate the area ASAP. If defined evaluation routes are not accessible then leave the area by another routes. If anybody is trapped inside, inform inside, inform the Fire & Safety Personnel. 2. Electrical shock: Dissociate the casualty from the electrical contact : - Switch off the main supply. : - Remove the electric wire by help of dry wooden / plastic bar. The rescuer should stand on dry wooden plate / rubber mat etc. Immediately inform to fire & safety personnel. Do not touch the casualty by bare hands even after the cutting of electric supply. To dissipate the static charges from the body of casualty, earth the body. Check breathings rate of the injured person. Give him artificial respiration viz : Mouth to mouth respiration. Pressing of chest 15 times in 70.5 seconds etc. Give him any mild hot drinks. Transport to hospital. Immediately inform to fire & safety personnel. Do not touch any electric appliances for ON /OFF purpose. Put off all fires in the surrounding vicinity. In case of enclosed area, open the door & window for ventilation. Segregate the area by using roaps and straps. Do not allow any body to enter into this area.
  • 18. 18 3. Gas leakage If leakage is in cylinder, remove it to the open space for dispersing the gas into the atmosphere. If leaking cylinder catches fire:-- Extinguish it by dint of damb clothes (in case of small fire) Apply water over the body of cylinder for the safe distance.
  • 19. 19 ROLES & RESPONSIBILITY OF SAFETY COMMITTEE @ iAi  Conduct training & awareness session for safety for the employees.  The committee is required to meet once a month to review safety audit points & analyze accidents actions.  Follow up on the action plan as per the schedule agreed with different departments.  Safety audits are to be conducted on a monthly basis to ascertain whether all the safety requirements within the facility are adhered to properly or not. All departments/locations of respective units are required to be audited as per schedule is to be made for a calendar year.  It is the responsibility of safety committee to advise, provide and ensure through continuous improvement the following :- - Spreading health and safety awareness amongst employees. - User /Employee friendly productive environment. - Prevent injuries and properly loss. - Raise safety awareness. - Raise housekeeping awareness. - Identify weakness in existing housekeeping and safety systems and correct the situations. - Promote the policy “ A place for everything and everything in its place & safe’’  There will be a safety committee in every plant of the group.  Safety committee is a forum that looks after various aspects of health& safety in all the facilities. It will have equal representation from staff and workman and maximum of 8 members.

SCOPE & COVERAGE AREA FOR STUDY All manufacturing areas are covered of imperial auto industries limited in this study. Like- Maintenance, Tool room, Dispatch, store, Moulding, Extrusion, Nylon, Mixing, Dryline, Balding. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The research and methodology adopted for the present study has been systematic and was done in accordance to the objectives set which has been detailed as below. DETERMINE SOURCES OF DATA: There are two main sources of data 1. Primary data 2. Secondary data Primary data Closed-ended questionnaire are used to collect data from Operators. Sample size The total no. of Operators are included in the survey are 50. Sampling Method Used To get more accurate result, Random study method is used.

In addition, 14 % employees don’t know how to use fire extinguisher .because these all 14 % employees are new in company.  78 % employees said ventilation and lighting facilities is very good in working area of iAi .and 12 % employees said good, 8% employees said average & 2%employees said ventilation and lighting facilities is poor in working area.  Satisfaction level of employees regarding company’s safety norms: 54% employees are satisfied by company’s safety norms. In addition, 30% employees are moderates and 02% employees are dissatisfied and14percentageemployees are highly dissatisfied by company safety norms.  Working time of 34% employees is less than one year at iAi. And working time of 20% employee’s b/w 1-3year.and 46 % employees working time at iAi is more than 3 year.  Maximum employees said company provides all safety measure based on work requirement.  78 % employees said emergency and exit doors, syron & emergency bells available in company premises in case of any emergency.

CONCLUSION The imperial auto industries limited was established in 1969.and company head office is located in Faridabad .IAI is an integrated manufacturer of fluid transmission products (FTP’s) In2007, IAI ltd established new plant in Pantnagar (Rudrapur).In this plant company started manufacturing of rubber-molded parts, brake tube assay and in present time company manufacture large varieties of products like, Fabricated pipes & CNG tubing, Silicon hoses IRIS/ZIP model parts. In present, time 750 employees working here. I started our project with the organization study, and I passed through the various department of the organization like, Moulding, Extrusion, Nylon, and Dryline. After organization study, I selected research topic safety at imperial auto industries ltd. I carried on our research through the descriptive research methodology in which prepared 50Structured questionnaire with 10 questions & demographic information and surveyed employees, the result and finding of the study are- in our survey we found that very few accident are meet and employees are more satisfied by lighting and ventilation facilities in working areas of organization. I am very much thankful for the wonderful accommodation facilities from iAi ltd & continue support of HR dept in completion my project. I hope this experience will surely help me in my future and in my shaping career.
