The water management team at S M Sehgal foundation, a rural development NGO in India, explains how water augmentation is a critical step to solve the water crisis.
Water Augmentation – A Critical Step To Solve The Water Crisis
1.
2. Groundwater is the main source of
freshwater for household, agricultural, &
industrial sectors. It is critical for domestic
use and for long-term food security for the
large Indian population.
Since groundwater is depleting at a fast
pace due to over extraction, augmenting
groundwater is a critical step to solve the
water crisis.

3. Water augmentation looks to increase availability and supply of water.
WHAT IS WATER AUGMENTATION?

With most parts of Northern India dependent on rainfall, augmenting water availability by
harvesting every drop of rainwater is a necessary starting point.
6. RECENT INITIATIVES
The government, realizing the gravity of the situation, launched the “Catch the
Rain” campaign under the National Water Mission.
The National Water Mission outlines the need for external partners, corporates
and NGOs to step up in this effort to augment water availability.
7. RECENT INITIATIVES
Two of the actionable issues under this goal are:
Encourage participation
of NGOs in various
water management
activities.
Support & promote water
conservation &
management,
augmentation &
preservation as part of
corporate social
responsibility.
8. Local and national NGOs are
important stakeholders in this
effort of water management.
These NGOs are also
successful in empowering
women to act for access to
safe water and adequate
sanitation.

9. STORIES FROM THE GROUND
S M Sehgal Foundation (Sehgal
Foundation) has been working since
1999 to improve the quality of life of the
rural communities in India. Its Water
Management program works with
communities to harvest and store
rainwater for direct use, and replenish
groundwater by building and restoring
infrastructure in villages.
10. Under a CSR-supported project, S M
Sehgal Foundation rejuvenated the pond in
a village in Behror block, Alwar district,
Rajasthan. Catchment area of the pond
was increased and the structure was
rejuvenated through desilting and directing
the water flow. The water level of nearby
wells for irrigating crops has also started to
go up and so is the water table.
