TYPES OF
PSYCHOLOGICAL
TESTS
Psychological Tests
A particular psychological test is developed
for the assessment of a particular
psychological attribute of the persons
being tested. It can’t be used for carrying
out the assessment of the persons with
regard to other psychological attributes.
In general, the psychological tests so
developed may be classified into the
categories mentioned here.
1. Achievement Tests
Used in assessing what a person
has achieved, acquired or learnt.
Example of Famous Tools in this type:
California Achievement Test (CAT)
Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT)
Stanford Achievement Test (SAT)
Metropolitan Achievement Test,
2. Personality Tests
Used in assessing personal qualities or
characteristics referred to as personality traits.
Example of Famous Tools in this type:
Cattell's 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF)
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
Eysenck Personality Inventory
Eysenck Personality Questionnaire
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)

3. Aptitude Tests
Used in assessing different aptitudes capable
of predicting one’s success in the area of the
particular aptitude such as mechanical,
numerical, clerical, closure etc.

Differential Aptitude Tests (DAT)
General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB)
Multiple aptitude tests (MAT)
David’s Battery of Differential Abilities (DBDA)
4. Interest test
Used in the assessment of the varying
interests possessed by an individual such as
interest in gardening, literary interest,
interest in social work etc.

5. Attitude Tests
Used in assessing the attitude of the
persons towards a thing, an idea, a
person, philosophy, custom, tradition,
etc.

6. Intelligence Tests
Used in assessing the intelligence or level
of cognitive functioning of the individuals.

7. Emotional Intelligence Tests
Used in assessing the level of
emotional intelligence possessed by
the individuals.

Mangal Emotional Intelligence Inventory,

8. Mood and Motivation Tests
Used in assessing the nature of the
mood and motivational levels of the
individuals.

9. Adjustment Inventories or Tests
Used in assessing the level of one’s
adjustment towards self and
environment.

10. Neuropsychological Tests
Used in assessing deficits in cognitive
functioning (i.e. ability to think, speak,
reason, etc.) that may result from some
sort of brain damage such as stroke or
brain injury.

Used to assess specific matters of clinical
concerns such as level of anxiety,
depression, mental retardation, emotional
disturbance, etc.

12. Test for Human Resource Development
A psychological test for a job, often called a psychometric test, is a
standard, scientific method used to measure a person's mental
capabilities and behavioral style, says the Institute of Psychometric
Coaching These tests are designed to measure candidates' suitability
for a role based on the required personality

  • 2. Psychological Tests A particular psychological test is developed for the assessment of a particular psychological attribute of the persons being tested. It can’t be used for carrying out the assessment of the persons with regard to other psychological attributes. In general, the psychological tests so developed may be classified into the categories mentioned here.
  • 3. 1. Achievement Tests Used in assessing what a person has achieved, acquired or learnt. Example of Famous Tools in this type: California Achievement Test (CAT) Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) Metropolitan Achievement Test,
  • 4. 2. Personality Tests Used in assessing personal qualities or characteristics referred to as personality traits. Aptitude Tests Used in assessing different aptitudes capable of predicting one’s success in the area of the particular aptitude such as mechanical, numerical, clerical, closure etc. Example of Famous Tools in this type: Differential Aptitude Tests (DAT) General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB) Multiple aptitude tests (MAT) David’s Battery of Differential Abilities (DBDA)

Attitude Tests Used in assessing the attitude of the persons towards a thing, an idea, a person, philosophy, custom, tradition, etc. Example of Famous Tools in this type: Thurstone Attitude Scales, Likert Attitude Scale, Study of Values Rajamanickam's Religious Attitude Scale, Rajamanickam's Radicalism – Conservatism Scale
  • 8. 6. Intelligence Tests Used in assessing the intelligence or level of cognitive functioning of the individuals. Example of Famous Tools in this type: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), Wechsler–Bellevue Intelligence Scale, Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scales, Vineland Social Maturity Scale, Cattell Infant Intelligence Scale, Binet Kamat Test of Intelligence (BKT), Kohs Block Design Test, Alexander Pass along Tes,t Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM), Leiter International Performance Scale, California Test of Mental Maturity, Bhatia's Battery of performance tests of intelligence, Army General Classification Test (AGCT)
  • 9. 7. Emotional Intelligence Tests Used in assessing the level of emotional intelligence possessed by the individuals. Example of Famous Tools in this type: Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Tests (MSCEIT), Kumar & Narain’s Emotional Intelligence Scale, Mangal Emotional Intelligence Inventory, Self-report Emotional Intelligence Test (SREIT) (Schutte et al., 1998), Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) (Petrides and Furnham, 2001)

Neuropsychological Tests Used in assessing deficits in cognitive functioning (i.e. ability to think, speak, reason, etc.) that may result from some sort of brain damage such as stroke or brain injury.
