Guyana Alumni
Association, NY Inc.
2016-2017 Annual Report
Prepared on behalf of QCAANY President , Karen Wharton
By Shindy Johnson
Assistant Secretary-Treasurer
2. “Mr. Vice President, members of the Executive, members of QCAANY,
welcome to our 25th Annual General Meeting. It is wonderful to see you
here at this, the first AGM to be chaired by yours truly, having served as
your President over the past 13 months. Thank you for that privilege.”
“I must especially thank our very supportive Vice President, Michael Jones
for his leadership on a number of fronts including his stewardship of the
constitution restatement; our Secretary, Gordon Wilson, who ensures that
our communications reflect our tradition of excellence; our Treasurer,
Terrence Campbell and our Organizing Secretary, Saran Nurse, for
protecting our treasury and pursuing events that promote the interests of
QCAANY ; our Assistant Secretary-Treasurer, Terrence Blackman, for being
a stellar ambassador for QCAANY; our Technical Advisor, Clive English, for
encouraging our use of technology to help advance our goals; our
Immediate Past President, John Campbell, for handing over to this
Executive Body, an organization that was fiscally stable and
programmatically on the upswing; and our membership for your support
and your loyalty to our association, our school and our country. Thank
you!”
“Our primary 2016-2017 goals were to build upon our programmatic
successes and to improve the organization’s financial health. We agreed to
diversify our fundraising strategies and to set a goal of $20,000; and to re-
invigorate some of our standard events by introducing new ideas and
concepts.”

19. SEMPER FIDELES
Service
After the 2017 Student Conference, QCAANY members
Terrence Blackman and Shindy Johnson, along with
alumnus Chris Wilson, visited the QC field for the first time
in decades.
The field was in such an abominable condition that they
immediately put in motion a plan to periodically weed
the grass. That spark has blossomed into a permanent
program, now managed by the Board of Governors.

23. THANK YOU FOR YOUR
SUPPORT:
Did we meet our mission and
our goals in 2016-2017?
Yes, we did!
We improved our organizations’
financial health. We built upon
our programmatic successes at
Queen’s College. We
reinvigorated our events
offerings. We were involved in
our community. We did it!
Now ladies and gentlemen,
members, friends and
supporters, TAKE A BOW!
24. Looking Ahead
“Looking forward, then, what more can we do?”
The College-Bound mentoring program being led Jamella Chesney is intended for QC
students who are seriously interested in attending colleges in the US. It must be given
priority. It potentially creates a pipeline between graduating seniors and our
association. It also requires developing relationships with educational institutions.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is an opportunity for our organization to create a
collaboration between young alumni and more established alumni (mentors) who
might not otherwise be involved.”
“My challenge, then, to the incoming executive is to articulate a vision, and present a
plan of action that will help advance that vision. The goals should be clear,
measurable and achievable. Then we should immediately begin executing on the plan.
We can change the world.”
In closing, ladies and gentlemen, I realize that my presidency is historic. I appreciate
the confidence my election to this post represents and the encouragement you have
shown. To loosely quote from one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, Othello: I pray
that I have done the state some service, that I have adequately served the association
in my efforts to build upon the work of my predecessors. Thank you for your allowing
me to be your president over the past 13 months.”
Semper fideles. Always faithful.
