    K I WA N I S I N T E R N A T I O N A L Welcome to Our Club Kiwanis International 2016 NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION PROGRAM 28

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Welcome to the Kiwanis Club of _______________ and to Kiwanis International. Thank you for joining us as we “Serve the Children of the World.” People join Kiwanis for many reasons. Whatever your reason, you will achieve the most of your membership through your participation in meetings and activities. This orientation is designed to help you learn a little bit about Kiwanis International and our club. It also provides an overview of activities to help you get involved. The objectives of this orientation are to: Inform you on basic Kiwanis information. Ensure you know where to go to get your questions answered. (Distribute the New Member Workbooks, and briefly explain there are sections to write down information, as well as room at the back to take notes.)
  • #3 Kiwanis International has an impressive history. While our club directly impacts our community, there are more than 8,000 clubs worldwide doing the same. Together, our efforts are changing the world we live in. Refer to New Member Workbook, page x.
  • #4 As an organization, this is who we are, why we serve, and what we aspire to be… Refer to New Member Workbook, page x.
  • #5 The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International guide us. They were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Convention in Denver, Colorado. Through the succeeding decades, they have remained unchanged. Refer to New Member Workbook, page x.
  • #6 Kiwanis clubs’ service projects often are linked to the Kiwanis International program, “Young Children: Priority One.” This initiative places continuing focus on the needs of young children through the age of five. Worldwide, the entire Kiwanis family is committed to eliminating the devastating effects of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), the world’s leading preventable cause of mental retardation. More than 1.5 billion people are at risk of suffering IDD because they do not receive enough iodine in their diet. But, because of Kiwanis’ efforts, many parents who have been affected by IDD are able to watch their children grow up healthy and reach their full physical and mental potential. The results of the IDD program will benefit every future generation. Discuss club’s level of participation.
  • #7 Through Kiwanis membership, communities are improved, friendships are built, leadership skills are developed, and business contacts are made. More importantly, the lives of children around the world are changed for the better. Include any club, division or district benefits (i.e. district and club newsletters, education conferences, leadership education).
  • #8 Include any expectations beyond this list that are specific to your club.
  • #9 Note: If needed, contact your district office or Kiwanis International to get the most recent figures.
  • #10 Refer to New Member Workbook, page x.
  • #11 Refer to New Member Workbook, page x.
  • #12 Note: Explain that officers change with each administrative year, which begins October 1. Provide the current officers, their roles in the club, and explain any plan of succession. Refer to New Member Workbook, page x. Have attendees write down the officers’ names. Provide information for a key person they can contact with questions (i.e. a designated club member, a new member mentor, or their sponsor.)
  • #13 Along with Young Children: Priority One projects, service activities address other needs within the community, such as working to stop substance abuse, helping the elderly, promoting literacy, supporting youth sports and recreation, responding to disasters, and supporting specific persons in need. Some of our services projects are: Refer to New Member Workbook, page x. Ask attendees to note which projects interest them. Note: Highlight the major events if your club has too many to list.
  • #14 Things to note: Distinguished Club Growth Awards Service Awards District Recognition Hixson and Tablet of Honor Recipients
  • #15 It is extremely important to explain to new members (and guests) what to expect (singing, happy dollars, meals, committee reports, etc.) so they feel comfortable at the first few club meetings.
  • #16 Explain difference between club member and members of the board of directors.
  • #17 Explain that all members are welcome to attend board meetings, but only board members may vote.
  • #18 Explain the impact of club committees in the community and how members may choose a committee to join.
  • #19 Briefly explain each. Refer to New Member Workbook, page x. Ask attendees to note which committees they are interested in.
  • #20 Kiwanis plays a special role in developing future generations of leaders. K-Kids clubs at the elementary school level, Builders Clubs in middle school and junior highs, Key Clubs in high schools, and Circle K clubs at the collegiate level all are Kiwanis organizations that teach community service and leadership skills to children, youth, and young adults. Aktion Clubs are made up of adults with mental and physical disabilities who enthusiastically perform service to help others. In addition, there are Kiwanis Junior clubs for young professionals in Europe.
  • #21 Explain some of the sponsored club’s activities and the Kiwanis club’s involvement. Refer to New Member Workbook, page x.
  • #22 Though it is important to stress active participation, it is equally important to be understanding of work and family commitments on new members. Encourage them to attend as much as possible without making it a requirement. Make sure they are aware of how to stay in touch when they miss a meeting or activity (i.e. club newsletter, Web site, or contact person).
  • #23 Explain amounts and what the costs are covering. As long as there is value or a good reason, people won’t mind paying dues. Hint: Breaking the annual dues amount down to a monthly cost makes it more reasonable.
  • #24 Refer to New Member Workbook, page x. Everyone is welcome to attend a division council meeting. Note how often they occur.
  • #25 Note: If needed, contact your district office or Kiwanis International to get the most recent figures. Refer to New Member Workbook, page x. Also provide contact information for the district office.
  • #26 Kiwanis International conducts an annual convention, which is staged to:          Elect International Board members          Amend the International Constitution and Bylaws          Conduct leadership and membership education          Provide Kiwanis fellowship          Provide guidance and inspiration for clubs Each club is entitled to send two delegates and two alternates to the International convention. These delegates compose the House of Delegates and vote on the election of officers to the Board of Trustees, resolutions, and proposed amendments to the International Constitution and Bylaws. District conventions and conferences achieve the same objectives but at the district level. If appropriate, discuss dates, locations, and club policies for sending members to each of these events.
  • #27 International The Kiwanis International Foundation was founded in 1939. Its mission: “To assist Kiwanis International in serving the children of the world.” The Kiwanis International Foundation: Awards grants. Raises funds. Administers awards. • #28 Slogan: By each club impacting its own community and as a global organization, we are Serving the Children of the World. Motto: Throughout its history, the Kiwanis name has been synonymous with endeavors that build character, knowledge, commerce, communities, and – through genuine concern for others – hope. We Build in Kiwanis. The name: Kiwanis stems from a North American Indian phrase, which, like many aboriginal terms, had a variety of meanings, including; “We have a good time,” “We make a noise,” or “We trade.”
  • #29 Don’t forget to ask the new members if they have any additional questions you can answer. Refer to New Member Workbook, page x. Point out the items on the suggested Activity Checklist for New Members.
